I was there when Gibson hit the Homerun off Goose Gossage.
I had seasons tickets for the Lions through Barry Sanders whole career. I saw so many marvelous football runs.
Chargers @ Raiders, 11/22/81. Fouts threw 6 TDs, 5 to Kellen Winslow. Final score 55-21. As a Bolt fan, I didn’t make too many friends that day.
NFC Championship game, January 2009 Arizona Cardinals beat the Philadelphia Eagles for their first trip to the Super Bowl ever.
These aren’t particularly memorable games in the scheme of things, but certainly were exciting to me at the time.
George Strickland (who?) was my favorite player with the Cleveland Indians. He’d been the regular 3B-man in 1959 and regular SS earlier, but this was later in his career. The Indians were down by a run or two going to the bottom of the ninth. My father said we should go and beat the traffic. But somebody got a hit or a walk and they put Strickland in to pinch run so I begged to stay and the Indians pulled the win out.
But probably the most exciting game I ever saw the Indians Tigers game on Aug 14, 1958. I was 9, but still remember this game. The Indians jumped out to an early led but then fell behind. In the bottom of the 8th, they scored five times including a steal of home by Vic Power. Detroit tied in the the ninth and in the bottom of the 10th, Vic Power stole home again with two outs to win the game.
All Blacks vs British and Irish Lions, Second Test in Wellington 2 July 2005 . After a controversial first test, where tour captain Brian O’Driscoll was injured in a dubious fashion the Lions had demolished Manawatu 109-6. They opened the second test in fine style with a try under the posts to Gareth Thomas. And then Dan Carter produced the most dominating display by a first five-eight that I have ever seen.
Final score 48-18 to the All Blacks with Carter scoring 33 points including two tries. It was a hell of a game. Oh and full credit to the Lions fans who remained cheerful throughout and didn’t let the result get in the way of having a good time.
I saw Ted Williams beat the Tigers 11 to 8 with a grandslam. It would have been better if I weren’t a Tiger fan and it wasn’t at Tiger stadium. As the game wen ton and we had a lead , I felt pretty safe. Then they started to get players on base. I thought" shit if they get 2 more on base, Williams will come up ". I knew that was not a good idea. His popups were caught by the outfielders deep in the field. They took a couple minutes to come down. Well, it seemed like it to a kid.
On Memorial Day of 1991 at Yankee Stadium, Mel Hall homered with men on base to beat the Red Sox 6-5, capping a comeback from 0-5 earlier in the game. This would prove to be the highlight of the season, as the Yankees finished 71-91.
In a not so exciting but more important game, the Yankees beat the Indians in game 6 of the 1998 ALCS to advance to the World Series. David Cone took a 6-0 lead into the fifth when he lost it all at once; a Jim Thome upper-deck grand slam cutting the lead to 6-5. Then in the sixth, the Yankees loaded the bases for Derek Jeter, who drove one to right center. Manny Ramirez leapt up in an apparent attempt to rob Jeter of a home run, only to see the ball strike the wall near his feet and go for a bases-clearing triple that created the eventual final score of 9-5.
January 3, 1993. The Buffalo Bills come back from a 32 point deficit to beat the Houston Oilers in the playoffs. An NFL record.
October 15, 2005 - Southern Cal v. Notre Dame, also known as the “Bush Push” game. As a Notre Dame fan, it was a friggin’ rollercoater. We came into the game at #7, facing a #1 USC team that had won 27 games in a row, and we had not been doing well against them. Reggie Bush was a monster - I’ve never seen such speed on the college field before. It was the most strategic first half I’ve seen - lots of huge plays, lots of huge defensive stands. The fourth quarter was ridiculous. The score went back and forth, and it seemed like the Irish had it in the bag until Leinert dropped a pass in behind coverage to Dwayne Jarrett. I really don’t care much about the Bush Push - everyone does that. I just wish the refs would have called a penalty on Carroll, who stands 15 yards onto the field every play.
A brilliant display by Carter, as a grudging Lions supporter I’d have to agree.
But lisiate, come on. I’ll allow a degree of antipodean understatement but you can’t seriously think there was anything “dubious” about the spear tackle on O’Driscoll. It was damn near a neck-breaker.
Sydney Olympics 2000, Athletics on Day 11 “Super Saturday”
Cathy Freeman wins 400m final.
Coming into the home straight Freeman in lane 6 was probably 5m back from where she should have been. In the words of Bruce McAveny “Freeman’s got work to do”, and then motored home with about 110,000 Aussie in the stadiun screaming “GO, GO, GO”. The 2nd, 3rd & 4th placegetters all ran personal bests.
The 2000 Winston 500 at Talladega. It was the race where Dale Earnhardt went from 18th to first in the last 3 laps of the race. I was mad, since my driver had led the most laps and I hated Earnhardt.
I was also at the first win for Dale Jr. in the Busch series and again for his first win in the Cup series. Since his dad was still alive, he wasn’t as popular as he would become, but he was definitely popular. I was also at Jeff Burton’s first Cup win.
June 9, 1973 Belmont Stakes. Secretarit won. The only horse race I ever went to.
You had to be there.
1994 World Cup Round of 16 game between the U.S. and Brazil. On the 4th of July. Waited in line for about 24 hours for game tickets. The Brazilian fans started dancing and drumming at about 7AM and didn’t stop until some time after the game. Unbelievable atmosphere. A total mob scene, but one without any menace whatsoever. I still have the t-shirt I bought at Stanford Stadium.
The U.S. was well outmatched, of course, and did well to slow the game down enough to only lose 1-0. It was funny watching the Brazilian fans start to doubt a little when they went into halftime tied 0-0. Of course it couldn’t last forever… It’s funny, reading the match recap, but I don’t remember Leonardo being sent off in the first half. Guess that helps explain the result.
In 1973, I was at the playoff game between the Mets and the Reds where Pete Rose started a brawl with Bud Harrelson. Great game, too.
Euro 2000, kwarter final between Holland and Jugoslavia…6-1 to the home team, awesome!
I was watching that with a group of friends about a mile from the stadium. After the long pass completion late in the game, we turned off the sound on the TV. The windows were open and we could hear the crowd going nuts.
Great game, I was on the 50 yard line in the student section. My friend who joined me had had season tickets to the Miami Hurricanes and had been to Buffalo Bills playoff games. He said that was by far the loudest stadium he had ever been in.
My most exciting was Usain Bolt’s 100 meter world record in NYC in 2008. Electric atmosphere.
I was young and can’t remember all the details, but probably the most exciting moment I have been present for was a Cincinnati Reds game sometime in early July 1980. Earlier in the evening Johnny Bench had tied the record for most home runs by a catcher in a career (It may have been a double-header so I don’t know that it was the same game). It comes down to the bottom of the ninth inning with the Reds behind by a couple of runs. The Reds have men on base (I think bases were loaded, but it may have just been two men on) with two outs. Johnny Bench comes up to the plate. The excitement of the crowd was amazing with everyone anticipating the possibility of Bench breaking the record with a game-winning home run. The count got to 3-2, then Bench fouled off more pitches than I have ever seen a batter do. It seemed with each pitch the crowd just got more pumped up. Unfortunately, Bench eventually grounded out to the shortstop.
I have seen two walk-off home runs in person, but in neither case did the excitement match what was in that stadium that night.
Easy, Nolan Ryan’s 7th no hitter. The atmosphere was absolutely electric.
What was funny was I had 4 tickets, took my gf and a best bud but even after calling about a dozen friends wasn’t able to find anyone to fill the 4th seat. Then, the next day of course everyone calls back after hearing what happened and kicking themselves that they weren’t in.
My brother lives in Philly, and told me of the guy that called into the radio station the morning after Halladay’s playoff perfect game. Said he and his dad had tickets, but his dad wasn’t feeling well so they didn’t go. Radio guys said, “yeah, yeah - we’re getting a lot of these calls”. Guy responds, “no - you don’t understand. My dad was also at Don Larsen’s game in 1956.”
