Yeah, the most harrowing part of this is _how many tests were done_. We’ve all seen the images from the most famous tests, but there were so many, many more.

Another good bit of real-life harrowing video is this one, a time-lapse map of all the nuclear explosions there have every been, done at a rate of about 2 months/per second, up to 1998:

[There have been 2,121 tests done since the first in July 1945, involving 2,476 nuclear devices. As of 1993, worldwide, 520 atmospheric nuclear explosions (including 8 underwater) have been conducted](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nuclear_weapons_tests)

I lived in Nevada for a year when I first moved to the states. I took a certain perverse pleasure in the fact that a majority of nuclear explosions that the human race has detonated in its history were in my home state 🙂

Not from a movie, but I always find this video chilling:

As a teen, I read Asimov’s story “Silly Asses” and was astounded by the insight hinted at by the animation above: we (Humanity) are doing this all backwards.

We should have mastered space flight long before weaponizing nuclear fission, and using nuclear weapons on your own planet is actively suicidal.

> "Silly Asses" is a science fiction short story by American writer Isaac Asimov. It was published in the February 1958 issue of Future Science Fiction, after having been twice rejected by other outlets. It was subsequently included in the collections Have You Seen These? in 1974 and Buy Jupiter and Other Stories in 1975. It runs to less than two pages in paperback.
