Most horrifying movie finale you have ever seen

The ending of The Orphanage (El Orfanato) is just gut-wrenching. It stuck with me for a long time.

My first thought was that you were talking about the 2019 Oscar-nominated short film, Saria (bad enough that I had managed to suppress my memory of the name of the movie). Gut wrenching is an understatement for this one. Made even worse by the fact that it is based on real events.

Despite the fact that it is only 22 minutes long it is a fitting entry to the list in this thread, but I would not recommend watching it (or even clicking on the links) unless you are prepared to be haunted by it for quite some time.

That was going to be my pick. I’m not sure that its absolutely at the top of my list but its up there.

Ah I didn’t have one until now, and now I have two. Now that someone mentioned Constantine.

Yes. Reading the comic makes the difference. In the comic (Hellblazer), John Constantine is a hard drinking, heavy smoking, scouse bastard. He might do magic, but most of his skillset is trickery. His friends get burned and killed by his actions, and mostly he walks about being sarcastic. A strong character.

Nothing like the whining, annoying crybaby they made a in a movie named after such a strong character.

And in related. The Stallone Judge Dredd. Comic Dredd? Six foot six, attitude of granite. Never takes helmet off. And first thing they do is for the short-arse to take his helmet off. Should have been Eastwood. With helmet on.

It also didn’t help they cameo’ed about 20 years of weekly comic arcs into 90 minutes. Imagine all the current Marvel Movies squeezed into an hour and a half, and you get Thanos appearing, waving, and walking off. That. Judge death. Rico. Mean machine. Angel brothers. And I’d be able to name more, except I won’t watch that botch-job again.

Sounds like if they remade that one it would be tailor made for Dave Bautista.

I’ve only seen one of the films on this thread (the remake of “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”). It startled me a little, but not sure I’d call it horrifying. When I saw “The Piano” I was hoping Holly Hunter wouldn’t get loose from the piano when it had gone overboard. The last scene would have been the piano underwater with a skeleton attached.

I think you meant to post this in the “Zero Star Movies” thread?

For me, the movie with the most horrifying ending is “Goodnight Mommy” (the original version, which I think is Austrian-I haven’t seen the American remake). I have seen movies that are much more gory and violent, but this one was really just too much for me. I might not regret watching it so much if there was anything good about this movie, but it’s just bad in almost every way.

I, too, did not like the movie (either version). The interesting thing is the “American remake” was a shot-by-shot remake by the same Austrian director, just with American actors.

Another instance where the “American remake” was directed by the same (Dutch) director that made the original. So as far as the sucky ending goes, he only has himself to blame for tainting his original vision.

But as far as “gut punch” endings go, I was floored by the implications of the final scene of The Invitation. This is an excellent movie with a number of twists. Just when you think it’s over, and you are catching your breath, and thinking “wow,” here comes the real final scene, with the gut punch.

Oh, yeah, I saw the German original, too. It was downright shocking and kind of incredible.

The original has stuck in my head since I first saw it, about whenever the video made it over here to the US. (“Saskia!”)

I watched about half the remake and gave up, so I didn’t even get to the goofy ending. (though I looked it up later)

I would check out the Karl Urban “Dredd”.

I also find the end of Whiplash to be horrifying. It’s an intense little thriller about a guy trying to be good at drums, but as soon as I saw it, it reminded me of the ending of The Long Walk by Bachman/King, which is a horror story. Because in both cases the character “wins” but evil has transformed them into something unrecognizable, thus rendering the win meaningless. I know some people would disagree with my interpretation of that film, but that’s what makes a good film.

Post deleted.

How Awful about Allan

He never saw that coming!

Public Enemy, the way Cagney comes home to his mother.

Never saw it.

I don’t recommend it. Everyone was terrified by it. I’ve seen grown men pull their own heads off rather than see the ending of Post Deleted.

The Eyes of My Mother

Well, that was certainly horrifying. A very effective and horrific scary movie that had a finale involving, at least if I understood it, a woman saying, “They won’t take my son!” and killing the son by shooting him. Oh, she had kidnapped the boy from his mother, who she had tied up in a barn and sewn her eyes shut.

I have no idea what to make of this movie, but it was intense.
