I actually like some of the songs mentioned, then again they were popular in the 60’s and 70’s during my impressionable childhood years. Although, in some cases I think it’s just because the tune is so catchy and has nothing to do with the lyrics.

But there are some real stinkers, I give my votes for “Havin’ my baby” and “I’ve never been to me.”

There’s a song that I think I have effectively blocked from my brain that I believe fits as nauseating. I think it was a few years ago and it had a “I’ve never been to me” vibe. I think it had something to do with a girl leaving an answering machine message that she was packing up and leaving the big city to go back home because someone broke her heart or some such drivel. I don’t think I want to remember this song so if no one does that’s fine by me.

I’ve always said that there’s nothing in that song about Honey _dying_. “One day…the Angels came” simply means that she was traded to Anaheim.

Even newbie me knows it’s uncool to say LOL on the SDMB but heck, Biffy, I’m LOL. And spitting coffee all over my keyboard. Thanks for the best chuckle I’ve had all day.

“Save Your Kisses for Me” I forget and I don’t wanna know who recorded it. That song made me want to strangle baby ducks.

What was the other one that made me scream and trample hedgehogs? oh yes…“The Day we went to Bangor” Again I forget and ditto

Brotherhood of Man.
Fiddler’s Dram (and it was Day Trip to Bangor).

Are you proud of me that I did that from memory?

[QUOTE=MonkeyMensch]
_Send in the Clowns_ is a pleasure to play on the piano though Sondheim only gets a C+ from me for his lyrical work on this one. It’s occasionally unfair to take songs out of musicals where they lose the context of the characters who sing the songs and the story that surrounds them.

Frank Sinatra singing it is an entirely different ball of ear wax. You could put together a list of choices for execution: Firing squad, ooga-booga, or listening to Ol’ Blue Eyes speaking/singing the song in question.

I’m a Journey fan, of sorts: Reminds me of college and some great tunes and harmonies are to be had. But _Open Arms_? Ew. The first thing I do when I perfect my time machine is to bust into the studio during recording, shouting, “More cowbell!”

With respect to Minnie Ripperton’s _Lovin’ You_ I bless my advancing years and its attendant loss of acoustic range that prevents me from hearing the dog-whistle protion of that dreck.

The song was written for Glynnis Johns as an after thought.

The ones I hate the most have the most innocuous melodies but have hidden double-
entendres in the lyrics of the most pernicious sort. “Afternoon Delight” by the Starland
Vocal Band probably being the best/worst example of that.

Just heard in my local supermarket “Oh you are a magnet, and I am steel.” Sure you are buddy
just not THAT kind of steel.

I’m sure there’s others…

Meant to add: I dislike almost all modern hip-hop and rap, but at least they make no bones
about wanting to bone the opposite sex. It may be graphic, but at least it’s straightforward.
