> Toad the Wet Sprocket was originally the name of an imaginary band in a Monty Python “rock news” bit, so it was probably inevitable that someone would name their real band after it. I wouldn’t be surprised if there had been other Toad the Wet Sprockets who just never made it past the garage band level.

The first time I heard the name “Toad the Wet Sprocket”, I was reminded of the story of what happened when Coca Cola was first marketed in China. They (allegedly) chose Chinese characters that phonetically represented the syllables Co-ca-co-la. Unfortunately, those characters also happened to represent the nonsensical phrase, “bite the wax tadpole”. I sort of assumed “Toad the Wet Sprocket” was the same kind of thing - a bad, literal translation of some language into English, such as you sometimes get when pasting Asian text into a machine-translation site.
Let’s see… we have (or had) a local cover band called Salmon Dave.

My old band’s name was pretty obvious, I thought, though I don’t think anybody else has used it: Ponophobic 😃

Is The Exploding Iron Penises taken? That one’s pretty obvious.

Not quite - I thought the same thing, too - even learned it at a top business school - but [Snopes set me straight](http://www.snopes.com/cokelore/tadpole.asp)…

I’ve thought that “Medical Waste” would be fine name for a Seattle based post-neo-grunge-metal band. No such group listed at AllMusic. (They do list a “Municipal Waste” though. Don’t ever mess with a band in waste management, if you know what I mean.)

I think Skankbait would be a great name for a band.

My brother-in-law was in a group called Three Orange Whips, which, I guess, means that one has been used.

I was once in a band with a guy who had been prevented from joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints because the elders believed he was just joining to meet spend time with a girl who was already in the church (he was, in fact.) We named the band Excommunicated Mormons.

No one’s done “Token Sane Man” or “The Jewish Space Lizards” so far, so I’m taking them. Not that I’m likely to be starting a rock band, but if I do I want you to remember that I called it first.

AFAIK, there has never been a band named “The Musicians.”

If there were, the bass drum should have a UPC barcode on it. 😉
