infovore - your post, and this thread, really drives home to me how there simply is no accounting for taste. and I must just accept that different people like different things. In the arts there are no objective criteria we can agree on, apparently.
(re your post - Princess Bride, yep boring; Christmas Story, ok but over praised; The Dark Knight - too long, I disliked every scene Ledger wasn’t in; Titanic - meh.)
I hated Inglorious Basterds. I felt as though my intelligence was being insulted.
Also the original Star Wars trilogy. Isn’t it weird how people can complain about inconsistencies in the Bible but if you use the same tactics to poke holes in Star Wars you get ostracized even worse?
The Matrix, which wasn’t absolutely awful but it led to part 2 and then finally part 3 which is I think the worst movie I’ve ever sat through and I saw it in Imax. That was like having to read the world’s worst book in BIG TYPE.
People just love love LOVED those films. The actors played their parts like they were convinced they were in the Bestest Movie Ever, and people seemed convinced that there was a MESSAGE, man.
6+ hours of crappy cyberpunk story built on 15 minutes of interesting idea/dark everything/trust nothing/bulletcam.
If you wanna see a movie with the class warfare themes presented much more clearly by talented young actors and Bill Murray playing a one percenter who endorses REAL class warfare while being bound by his obligations as a wealthy man, watch Rushmore.
I know a few people who were in this movie. Totally captures the spirit of inner-loop Houston, though it was originally planned to be set on the East Coast as people would not believe the innerloopers were like this. Trust me, we are; And Wes Anderson an Owen Wilson captured it perfectly. And smooth move to make Max a working class Jew. This was not planned until they met Jason Schwartzman.

Inglorious Basterds is a cowboys and indians spaghetti western type plot film thrown into a zeitgeist of WWII / Allies vs Axis. It’s not meant to insult or be insultingly dumb. I also think IB is overrated (nominated for 8 oscars), but not near the same extent as, say, Blair Witch Project or The English Patient.
