Agreed, but you didn’t say anything about the ending.
“The Wire”'s final moments are sort of an anti-finale; rather than wrapping things up, we see that things will continue much as they always have. Some characters move up, some stay where they are. Some have beaten their personal demons, and some have not, and some have demons anew. Baltimore goes on, as it always has. Like the rest of the series, the final moments are a reflection on the passage of life.
One that’s not a “true” ending- I loved the final episode of **Scrubs **(not the new one, but the one they THOUGHT would be the finale).
JD walking out of the hospital, with various callbacks to various patients, doctors, and people he’s met over the years, and then going out and having one last dream sequence, basically telling us it’s gonna be okay if the series is canceled. And we watch the home-movies sequence of a future that could be for JD, Turk, and Dr. Cox…
I thought it was a really well done finale, and totally pushed aside because of ABC picking up scrubs again… To me that ending will always be the True Finale.
I loved the Blake’s 7 ending. Audacious. (anyone else notice how the head alien on the new V series looks so much like the evil Supreme Commander Servalan?)
and yes the Newhart ending worked because it was a great comedic touch for a comedy series.
