What are your favorite Palm applications in the following categories: **Most Practical:** o Handyshop: a checklist with a brain. o Noah: A decent dictionary, free! o Smartdoc: View and edit doc files. Indispensible. **Work-Related:** o The Handspring calculator: in addition to what you’d expect from a calculator, it has lots of built-in unit conversions, and you can program in your own, once you figure out how! o Planetarium: Palm-sized displays aren’t too good for displaying the sky, but Planetarium has a “compass” display for locating planets. **Just for fun** o Patience: 15 classic solitaire games. Installed this the first week I had my Visor, and it’s still the game I play the most. ---

The [Palma Sutra](http://freewarepalm.net/mature/palmasutra.shtml), of course. I actually had occasion to use this recently. Nothing gets a guy interested like showing him my favorite application. 😃 ---

**Essential** Hackmaster Middle Caps Hack (lets you make capital letters by drawing the letter so it crosses from the letter area of the graffiti pad to the number area). Notepad Date Book+ (on Visors – much improved version of Date Book) Acrobat Reader for the Palm (in beta). MobileDB light (and Mobile DB conversion utility) **Useful and fun** MetrO – subways from all over the world. Great when traveling. CSpotRun – text viewer Yaps – a password-protected database. Good for keeping sensitive information. ---

As a baseball nut the only reason my Palm even exists is [ScorePad](http://www.scorepad.com), a baseball game scoring program where you keep score on the Palm, then upload them to a desktop app that prints the most beautiful game cards you’ve ever seen. Its gotten so bad that I listen to games over the internet and keep score. ---

“restaurant-o-fortune” I don’t know if that is its real name, but its made by teal. You input names of restaurants (larger cities have premade downloadable lists) and it will spin a wheel and pick a restaurant for you. This I love, because we can never decide where to eat. ---

First I have to agree with **CSpotRun** Others I swear by (Just the free ones…): [Launcher III](http://www.benc.hr/lnchiii.htm) - If you download only one, make it this one. A wonderful replacement for the standard UI. [Diddle](http://blevins.simplenet.com/diddle/diddle.htm) - A sketch tool [Diddle Bug](http://blevins.simplenet.com/diddlebug/index.htm) - Similar to Bug Me. [GNU Keyring](http://gnukeyring.sourceforge.net/) - Another program for storing passwords [HappyDays](http://jmjeong.com/palm/happydays/) - Birthday reminder - very nice. [CrytoPad](http://www.multimania.com/mlabelle/) - Encrypted memopad drop-in replacement. [XMaster](http://linkesoft.com/english/xmaster/) - Free drop-in replacement for Hackmaster. [WhatzUp](http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?platformId=1&siteId=1&productType=2§ionId=299&productId=1876&catalog=1) - Like the “Today” on CE devices… **Hacks** [Afterburner](http://www.palmblvd.com/software/pc/Afterburner-2000-10-05-palm-pc.html) - Palm speed booster. [Keyboard Replacement](http://palm.pair.com/palmkeyb.html) - A better keyboard [Menu Hack](http://palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=71182120010530083518&prodID=221) - The title bar will give menus like you thought it should the first time you used a Palm. And the Find Hack. All good. I’m very big on security. I use my Visor to store some rather sensitive things, so I depend upon things like GNU Keyring and Cryptopad to safely store my information. And if you seriously intend to take notes with your Palm, invest in a keyboard. Best $80 I’ve ever spent. ---

[EVEdit Hack](http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=65192320010301235949&prodID=1797) - A great hack that will enhance your memo pad, upgrade your clipboard, and has many more neat features. I never go anywhere without it. [SwitchHack](http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=65192320010301235949&prodID=220) - Easily switch between your palm apps. [Big Clock](http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=65192320010301235949&prodID=1611) - I use this one all the time and even use it as my alarm clock in the morning. [SFCave](http://www.palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=65192320010301235949&prodID=9720) - A simple but addictive game ---

As long as I’m thinking about it… **Games** : [Cribbage](http://davemayes.hypermart.net/cribbage.html) - And while you’re at it, Dave also has [Hearts](http://davemayes.hypermart.net/hearts.html) and [Rally 1000](http://davemayes.hypermart.net/rally.html) [Backgammon](http://palmgear.com/software/showsoftware.cfm?sid=13027020010530083516&prodID=9509) **PocketChess 1.1** - PC 1.x used to be freeware, but 2.x has stopped that. Search around for 1.1, it’s small, fast and easy to use.
