The winner is _The Wizard of Oz._ Your grandmother or your great grandmother knows quotes from it. If she’s really cool, she might know some from _Airplane_ or _Monty Python and the Holy Grail_ (which were the first two that I thought of) but she will definitely know where “There’s no place like home” and “We’re off to see the Wizard” are from.

Yes, I am serious…

This is Spinal Tap
Slapshot
Casablanca
Wizard of Oz

There have to be a number of Shakespeare plays that have lots of quotes although the films of them don’t really count.

And “We’re not in Kansas any more”, “And Toto, too?”, “Surrender Dorothy”, “Follow the yellow brick road”, “Are you a good witch or a bad witch”, “What about Dorothy?”

For our family, Tombstone is up there.

Well, ain’t that a daisy.
I’ll be your huckleberry.

Definitely the winner.

I’d put in a vote for the Marx Brother’s “Duck Soup.”

Just as a reminder, we are nominating the most quotable, not the most frequently quoted.

My favorite quotable movie is “A Man for All Seasons”. It is full of beautifully written, eminently quotable speeches.

This movie does not, however, have the pop culture cachet of “this one goes up to 11” or “Duuuude”.

While I agree that most of the movies here are more often quoted than mine, here are the ones that my friends and I quote the most:

New Jack City
True Romance
Do the Right Thing
Goodfellas
Casino
Pulp Fiction
Trainspotting
Shawshank Redemption

Not as popular:
Bottle Rocket
Straight Outta Brooklyn

I think there’s a difference between “quotable” and “recognizable.”

I cannot even tell you how many situations have lent themselves to a quote from _The Big Lebowski_. Something about that movie’s script gives it an ability to be adapted to almost any situation.

_The Wizard of Oz_, _Gone With The Wind_, _The Godfather_, _Star Wars_ and _Casablanca_ are probably the most recognizable, but most of the iconic lines from those movies only work in a few specific situations.

Not nearly at the top of the list, but I’ll throw in an honorable mention for Real Genius:

“There are lots of decaffeinated brands that are just as tasty as the real thing.”

“Don’t you know that eating that stuff can give you very large breasts?” [looks down] “Oh, my God! I’m too late!”

Hathaway: I want to see more of you around the lab.
Knight: Fine. I’ll gain weight.

“This? This is ice. This is what happens to water when it gets too cold. This? This is Kent. This is what happens to people when they get too sexually frustrated.”

"I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, “… I drank what?”
