Most untalented movie directors with lengthy careers

Sorry to nitpick, but I think the MST3K show you’re referring to had the movie Attack of the Eye Creatures directed by Larry Buchanan. The title card did indeed say “Attack of the the Eye Creatures”. One of the funniest MST3K episodes.

Michael Bay still has a career (because his shitty movies make money). Maybe it hasn’t been “lengthy” compared to some others, but it’s definitely been too long already.

You’re right – I mistook Larry Buchanan’s 1950s remakes for Beaudine’s work. My fault.
Beaudine’s the guy who did Billy the Kid vs. Dracula and Jesse James meets Frankenstein’s Daughter, which isn’t any improvement (except technically – at least the film is clean-looking. Buchanan’s stuff looks like he shot it through mud.)

The Incredible Shrinking Woman
DC Cab
St. Elmo’s Fire
The Lost Boys
Cousins
Flatliners
Dying Young
Falling Down
The Client
Batman Forever
A Time to Kill
Batman and Robin
8mm
Flawless
Tigerland
Bad Company
Phone Booth
Veronica Guerin
The Phantom of the Opera
The Number 23

OK, a few of these movies are actually good. But I think that is because the ‘director’ was too imcompetent to screw it up. (1981- how long lord, how long)

Joel Schumacher, you are the hackiest hack of Hacktown. Put the megaphone down, and back away from the set.

Wow – taking a second look at his entry, I see his directing career spanned 61 years, from 1915 to 1976, as movies went from silent one-reelers to just before Star Wars.

I don’t care what Roger Ebert says, Spike Lee is a hack.

Amen. So is Woody Allen.

See post #4.

You recommend this particular movie?

??

I’m not recommending any Beaudine movie, just pointing out that the 61-year career has already been explicitly pointed out.
I don’t think I’d recommend any Beaudine flick, although, as I’ve said, Ten Who Dared is probably the best choice of what I’ve seen. It’s Disney hiostory, though, so take it with plenty of salt.

Raja Gosnell is coming up fast on the outside track.

I would argue Tony Scott gives Schumacher a run for his money, since he’s made a whole lot of crap (and yes, I’m including True Romance, which has a rather inexplicable cult following) but never a movie as good as Tigerland. Still, Schumacher has him on sheer volume and diversity of badness; at least with Scott, most of his films are bad in the same, inevitably LOUD, blue-filtered way.

Kevin Costner…need Isay more?

I just want to say that I think Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay suck hardcore.

That can’t be true, can it?

Oh, no! It is true.

Had to pop back in to mention David Lynch.

David Lynch??

I vote for Fred Olen Ray.

I just popped in to make sure that Schumacher was listed. As far as I’m concerned there’s him and then there’s everybody else. Truly astounding.

Quentin Tarantino. I have never understood why anyone likes his crap. I think he is the most overrated director in the history of filmmaking.

I am sure many would disagree with me. But that’s the way I see it.

Lynch is inscrutable, and makes hard-to-understand films, but they’re art. Like them or hate them, you can write a dissertation on each one of his films – even the execrable DUNE – and someone else could write an equally credible dissertation disagreeing with you.

Try writing a dissertation on anything Brett Ratner has churned out. He’s got connections, and it looks like he’ll have a lengthy career re-imagining the complex works of Schumacher and Columbus so that they’re lighter and easier for the modern audience to understand. Or better yet: sequels!

I for one agree with you,I’ve always thought that QTs movies are formulaic and designed to shock in a juvenile way.

IMO his films are not so much for watching as for young males to talk about afterwards.
