My wife just showed me an invoice, for a subscription renewal to “Mother Jones Magazine”. I never ordered this piece of trash, nor would I read it. Nice try, you lying commies! You are using the same fraudulent tactics you accuse the ëvil big business"of! ---

Do you really believe that they just sent you an invoice hoping you’d pay for it, without getting a subscription request from someone alleging to be in your household? Really? Are they a printer-ribbon company and are we in the 1990s? It’s not uncommon for co-workers, friends, etc., to sign people up for subscriptions to magazines that are “counter” to one’s philosophy. ---

It’s not Mother Jones doing it, it’s a third-party scam operation. I’ve seen it with many magazines. The third party hopes people just pay the bill. You’ve really never seen this before? Mind you, if you pay the bill, you will get the subscription. The scammers will take a large piece of the money off the top, and start an introductory rate subscription. A dose of Mother Jones would be good for you. You have someone to help with the big words, don’t you? ---

Sometimes, though, it just seems that the scammers are targeting people based on sex or location. ---

Associated Publishers Network sent me a bill for $999.95 for 365 issues of the New York Times. I laughed. They operate out of Nevada. APN, not NYT. ---

Have magazines stopped sending people extra issues past the expiration of their subscription and then demanding a renewal fee? I ran into that once or twice in the pre-digital Dark Ages. ---

The umlaut appeared because he meant to type an open-quote (which closed after “business”), using shift-quote, but instead managed to hit ctrl-shift-colon (i.e., he fat-fingered two keys at once). This puts some editors in a mode such that the next character (“e”, in this case) has an umlaut over it. The odd part is that the normal text editors in Chrome, Firefox, and IE don’t seem to have this feature. Either he’s using some weird old browser or writes in Word and C&Ps the text. Well, that, or he wanted to [toughen up](http://www.theonion.com/articles/united-states-toughens-image-with-umlauts,4230/) his image. ---

I’ve gotten, over the past year or so, a dozen or so of these scam magazine offers. I don’t think I’ve fallen for anyone of them. Some of them were for magazines that I subscribed to and some of them were for magazines I would never subscribe to. I don’t know how they decide which magazines they send you a scam subscription offer for. I presume they buy information from someone.
