Well you say that, and yet we’re looking at raising the temperature of the planet a few degrees. Given ingenuity and (more importantly) constant, long-term impact, you can cause a great change. Using just tweezers, you could move a whole mountain, given a few thousand years, a lot of workers, and a steady supply of new tweezers. ---

The utility of it would be to help us understand basic science better, and possibly to aid us in developing better early warning systems. Mt Ranier, for example, has the capability of dumping 30 feet of mud on top of 100,000 people with virtually no warning. You’re not going to stop that from happening, but it would be nice to be able to predict that there’s a 90% chance of it happening tomorrow so that we could at least evacuate. ---
