Bush (in college looking at Laura): “Hey. There’s that girl who’s panties need a liberatin’. They need to find freedom. heh heh heh. Save me a line of happy nose dust. I’m a gunna catch up to her in that lie-berry place. heh heh heh.”

> Just caught part of her speech at a function, in whcih she took the piss out of hubby "I know how to pronounce “nuclear”.

The funny thing is that when Bush came on Fox TV a couple years ago to announce that he was certain that Iraq was developing “nucular weapons,” everyone else in the administration who also spoke about it—Rumsfeld, Cheney, even Colin Powell himself—also pronounced it “nucular.” That also seemed staged to me, calculated to make the president look like less of an idiot than he usually does. I’m sure that if Laura Bush had also been asked to lie to the country about what we were sure Saddam Hussein was up to, she would have put on a straight face and also said “nucular.”

Wheee! The daughter of a rich political family tells jokes about her husband, the son of a rich political family! I can’t believe it’s not on pay-per-view!

1. Bush is not the boss of anyone at the Correspondents’ Dinner.

2. No one laughs at the Correspondents’ dinner if the jokes aren’t funny. Clinton bombed at his first one.

I recently read “Clinton & Me,” by Mark Katz. Katz was Clinton’s humor speechwriter and worked with him on the speeches for all these dinners. According to Katz (and I think he’s right), the thing humor can really do, at least in Washington, is make your enemies say “Geez, I kinda like this guy.” (“Clinton & Me” is a great book, BTW.)

I’m not sure, she might have eschewed all the lying and talked instead about the 500,000 Kurds dead and 180,000 missing.

You really think Laura Bush would have ignored the lies that were used to sell this war to the American public? And you really think she would have chosen a statistic that would have alienated Turkey, whose support we were still trying to win at the time? Man, that Laura Bush is a veritable loose cannon of moral policy-making. I had no idea she was such a saint. Too bad her husband never listened to her. The United States might have retained the level of respectability it had back in 2000.

Give me a break. I know Bush isn’t the Washington press corps’ boss in the technical sense of the word. That doesn’t keep a goodly portion of the press corp from being major suck ups though, and laughing at the Prez’s wife’s obviously scripted jokes counts as being just sucking up to me. YMMV.

I opposed the war when it was mooted. I still oppose it now, now that we know a bit more about what went on. Blair is a toad (read the recently leaked cabinet minutes), Bush, to me, more of a buffoon. Clinton I could take (and that’s some admission from someone with an irrational dislike of liberals - actually, maybe why i could take him because he wasn’t really one). Laura I rather like. Hillary. No words can express. Anyone who wants to understand her needs only read the long, earnest, self-promotional, lawyerite, rewriting-of-history captions that she crafed for the endless photos in her book.

And why don’t they have ANY sense of humor? Jesus was not a drip, fer cryin’ out loud.

You all need to take the sticks out of your asses. I’m hardly a big Bush supporter, but when a wife can’t bust her husbands ass (scripted or not, piss your pants funny or not, original or not–arguably the most powerful ass in the free world at that), and it’s “not funny” or the audience is “a bunch of suck ups” simply because of who the target is, there’s something wrong. So what if the press is polishing apples? So what if the First Lady is recycling jokes? Everyone deserves a little levity in their lives. What’s a few more hours of being the butt of a joke if it’s at least entertaining a few people and they get a kick-ass dinner out of the deal?

Who said people - even politicians and/or the news media - don’t deserve a little levity? What they don’t deserve is virtual canonization just because they can deliver scripted jokes.

Look, Laura Bush is a nice woman, which no doubt contributes to the more than glowing reviews her performance has received. IMHO, the admininistration will laugh at jokes delivered at them by one of their own that they won’t laugh at if delivered by someone else. If the same jokes had been delivered by the evening’s MC, Cedric the Entertainer, they would’ve fallen flatter than Kansas, no matter how funny they were. As I reiterate, IMHO Laura Bush’s material was OK funny but certainly not Daily Show or Letterman/Leno quality of funny.

Em, no. Mildy witty, perhaps, if they were off-the-cuff.

But this is a script at a public function, about a public figure, and such _rich_ source material. You have to deliver just a bit more to count being funny. I thought all these politicians had professional script-writers? Are you saying that a script-writer wrote this, sat back after reading it through and said “Now, **that’s** funny! She’'ll slay 'em!” ?

I don’t think any comedians have anything to worry about. Dubya’s still the funniest in that family, and he isn’t trying to be.

All of the White House correspondents know that they can be replaced by an administration plant at any time.

And recalling Seinfeld, her show was _really_ a show about nothing.

I just have to go on record as saying I thought her jokes were funny. So did Jon Stewart. (Not nearly as funny as Clinton’s last WHC dinner monologue and [video](http://politicalhumor.about.com/library/multimedia/clinton-final-days.mov) (which I thought was absolutely hysterical), but still pretty cool.

And would you rather have your ass busted by close friends, or by me, a stranger? Of course you’d rather your friends roast you, because you can be pretty sure there is no malice behind it. If you let me bust on you, you can’t be sure I won’t take a cheap shot, or even a series of them, sensitive issue or not, just for laughs.

**No!** The _ **last** _ we need is for these people to get a grip. So long as they continue to say such outlandish things, the more likely they are to undermine their support. People who think that Laura’s comments were funny, who normally support Christian Coalition groups are going to be inclined to think that those are nutbags. In fact, they say the “right” things about Laura, and even Bush will have to consider backing off from enlisting their support.
