Where do you draw the line between sentient and non-sentient robots? Robocop is obviously the former, but what about a robot like ED-209? It doesn’t have much in the way of artificial intelligence. (and what it does have doesn’t work too well) From IMDB: \* [for demonstration, Mr. Kinney points a pistol at ED-209] ED-209: [menacingly] Please put down your weapon. You have 20 seconds to comply. Dick Jones: I think you better do as he says, Mr. Kinney. [Mr. Kinney drops the pistol on the floor. ED-209 advances, growling] ED-209: You now have 15 seconds to comply. [Mr. Kinney turns to Dick Jones, who looks nervous] ED-209: You are in direct violation of Penal Code 1.13, Section 9. _Jurassic Park_ has that scene where Sam Jackson is at the computer when the whole system locks up and Nedry’s little avatar pops up on the screen accompanied by his voice repeatedly taunting “ah ah aAah!” ---

The talking computer sequence in _Austin Powers_ appears near the start of the first film, when Austin is being removed from suspended animation. As for the “countdown to destruction” sequence later on, that’s just a technician speaking into a microphone. ---

Firefly episode Out Of Gas has the ship issuing warnings as the air runs out. In English and Chinese. btw, it’s Spider-Man, not Spiderman, sorry, major pet peeve of mine. ---

_Eagle Eye_ has lots of stuff with a computer’s voice, including warnings. I think there are computerized audio warnings in _Star Trek Generations_ when there’s a warp core breach in progress. Likewise in _Star Trek III: The Search for Spock_, when Kirk takes extreme measures to defeat the Klingons. ---

I thought of three talking computers, one of which has already been cited (HAL 9000). THE FORBIN PROJECT (1970) The American Colossus and Soviet Guardian computers join forces to hold the world hostage to the twin ICBM networks. Believable plot, good directing, but no name-actors. (100 minutes) The old TV series about the guy who traveled in time for some reason. He carried a credit card-size computer called “Selma.” This device could also blast criminals and even destroy motorcars. I think he was mainly looking for illegal time travelers who wanted to profit by changing the past. Singanas ---

What about Eddie, the ship’s computer in _Hitchicker’s Guide to the Galaxy_? Or is he too smart? There’s the scene where the missiles are coming at the _Heart of Gold_ with him counting down to impact. I can’t browse videos here but it’s been done on TV/movie a few times. Also what about _Armageddon_? I believe there is someone/thing counting down to the last second to blow the bomb. _Resident Evil_ has the image of the little girl show up and talk to them as they try to shut everything down. ---

Ugh, the stuff that clutters up my brain: In the horrible movie **Supernova** , there’s a voice-controlled computer named Sweetie that doesn’t quite seem like true AI, more like Mother from **Alien**. However, in the deleted scenes on the disc, there’s another ship’s computer named George, who is basically a decaying, barely-functioning version of Sweetie.
