Google tells me that there was indeed a movie from 1982 title simply _The Thing_ that was set in Antarctica, but until today the only movie I would think of was the 1951 movie with James Arness in the titular role. The full title was _The Thing from Another World_, and was set in an Arctic research station. All my life it has been referred to in shorthand as just [_The Thing_](https://www.tvguide.com/movies/the-thing/2000343656/). ISTM that disallowing _The Thing_ is akin to dismissing _Dr. Strangelove_ because someone doesn’t use the full title of _Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb_ ---

I did not realize that the 50s version was set in an Arctic research station; this was not a “you used the wrong name”; it was a “I thought all versions of The Thing were antarctic.” Actually, I hear “The Thing” and ALWAYS think of John Carpenter. I was familiar with the short story before the movie anyway. ---
