**Movies based on a book, and the author (or his/her estate/heirs) is/was salty about how it turned out.**

1. _The Fellowship of the Ring -_ Christopher Tolkien claims that Jackson “eviscerated” the book.
2. _The Shining_ - Stephen King was outspokenly dissatisfied with Kubrick’s version, so much so that he wrote and produced a mini series that would conform to his own original vision of the story.
3. _Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory_ - Roald Dahl was unhappy with the focus (and the name of the film) having been changed away from Charlie to Wonka, and did not like the music. He disavowed the film, and refused to sell movie rights to the sequel book as a result.
4. _300_ - Alan Moore is famously pricklish about the adaptations of his work. When interviewed by EW, Moore admitted that he had no interest in seeing the adaptation saying "I had a lot of problems with it, and everything I heard or saw about the film tended to increase [those problems] rather than reduce them: [that] it was racist, it was homophobic, and above all it was sublimely stupid.”
5. _Raise the Titanic!_ – Clive Cussler absolutely hated the way his book was simplified for the Jason Robards movie in 1980, and it was twenty-five years before he agreed to a movie treatment of another one of his novels (_Sahara_, in 2005).
,_(spoiler – he didn’t like the way that one turned out either, to the point that he sued the production company for breach of contract for drastically changing the screenplay)_

9. _Fahrenheit 451_ - OK, so Bradbury actually did like the score and some of the visuals, he was generally pissed off by interpretations of the book (and the movie isn’t alone in this) suggesting it was criticizing government censorship. It is actually about a dystopia where people have decided ON THEIR OWN to stop reading, stop thinking critically, and choose quick entertainment over thought. It’s actually a little scary when you read what he wrote back in the 1950s.

Originally posted _Cabaret_, then I remembered that it isn’t a traditional musical (unlike the stage show) in that with one exception, all the songs are performed in the Kit Kat Club. And the one exception is also a situation where people are actually singing-- it’s not an affect of the medium.
