Movie Recommendations for kids

Unbreakable, with Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson.

I third the recommendation of The Last Starfighter.

Around the World in 80 Days (the original David Niven version)
Singing in the Rain
Fantastic Voyage
Time Bandits

Also, I don’t thing they’re scary at all, but who knows with kids, but what about the classic Universal monster movies (Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, etc.)? I don’t think any of them are even 90 minutes long.

Space Camp
Any of the Muppet movies
Short Circuit
Batteries Not Included
The Boy Who Could Fly
The Wizard

Someone mentioned Flight of the Navigator which reminded me that there are dozens of Disney produced live-action PG movies to choose from including:

White Fang
Shipwrecked
Honey I Shrunk the Kids
The Rocketeer
Newsies
The Mighty Ducks
Cool Runnings
The Herbie movies
The Parent Trap
Davy Crockett
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
The Absent Minded Professor
Old Yeller
The Shaggy Dog
etc, etc, etc.

The Mighty Ducks

My son LOVED Laurel & Hardy - especially the shorts. I showed a couple of the funniest ones to my grandkids (5 & 6) and they really like them. It’s hard to find B&W movies that will hold a kid’s attention.

Same here, but I skipped past the Castle Anthrax scene - figured I wasn’t ready for that sort of sex ed for the kid yet.

If they liked the Secret of Kells they would probably also like Song of the Sea.

My kids are 11 and 13 but do not tolerate scary or creepy stuff at all. I tried showing them MIB and had to turn it off. :frowning: Some of the stuff we’ve watched and they’ve liked:

Marx Brothers (Monkey Business is their favorite, Duck Soup second)
The Princess Bride
Marvel Movies (Captain America, Avengers, etc.)
Anything by Aardman (Chicken Run, Shaun the Sheep, Wallace & Gromit, etc.)
Moana
Big Hero Six
Finding Dory

They have not seen Airplane! yet but it’s on my list to show them so they will finally get all the quotes I keep saying.

As for Ghibli movies, they do not like Spirited Away. The others are OK. Their favorite by far is Totoro.

I’d like to shown them Star Trek II also, but I’m not sure how well it stands up for kids who didn’t grow up with Star Trek on TV. They have seen a couple of episodes of TOS so we’ll see.

The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980)

The first two movies, at least. Three through five should go in the “the directors must be crazy” pile.

See the second if you want, it’s not a bad movie, but be advised that they tried to hit the same target as the first and missed.

Show them a film where the cast is only a bit older than they are, with kid-friendly slapstick, and great tunes: Bugsy Malone

Yeah, that’s a good one. And it is on Youtube.

It’s such a mad film, in retrospect. The actor who played Fat Sam went on to be a player in the New York “construction industry”. Dunno what happened to her who played Tallulah…

*E.T.

Babe

Mary Poppins

Princess Bride

Sound of Music

Willy Wonka

Stand By Me*

How about Frankie & Annette beach movies?

And speaking of live-action Disney flicks: The North Avenue Irregulars, which was very loosely based on a real incident in New Rochelle, NY.

The two Sister Act movies, the second in particular.

Oh, Jumpin’ Jack Flash! Like WarGames, this could serve as a technological history lesson.
