**Alien**. Just a stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid movie showing stupid people doing the stupidest thing possible in every situation.

The Kubrick version of **The Shining**. Yawn.

Yes, but I don’t know that everyone loved it. Out of movies that everyone seems to love: E.T., Avatar, and that awful, awful, Big Lebowski.

The Shawshank Redemption-

WTF is the love this movie gets? Ok it was good, but not that good. Is it the rape thing? Because it was brave enough to deal with male rape?

The protag literally has no character growth, he just realizes his best shot is manipulation and escape.

Pulp Fiction. 95% fresh on RT from both critics and audience. Called one of the most influential films of the 90s. I disliked it so much I couldn’t even watch the whole thing.

I could not make it through Avatar, Titanic, or The Big Lebowski. Didn’t care for Thelma and Louise, either. As for the LOTR crap, no way. If it’s Tolkein, I’m outta here!

I’m always amused at how these threads draw so much more hate for the over-appreciated than love for the under-appreciated.
Can I do a TV show? I nominate “Big Bang Theory.” I haven’t seen a ton of it, but what I have seen is nothing but shrill unpleasant nerd stereotypes shouting at each other, with not a joke to be heard.

> I was actually OK with the movie, but I couldn’t read the book. I tired reading the book before the movie came out, but I just couldn’t do it. The walking, and walking and more walking. But the book does also have the eating along with the walking.

For many of us, a big part of the appeal—of the book and/or the movie—is that we get to vicariously experience a long journey through Middle Earth. Tolkien’s challenge (and, maybe, Jackson’s) was to make the readers (or viewers) feel the length of the journey without boring them. IMHO he didn’t do too badly at this, but I can see how not everyone would have the patience for all that traveling.

Everybody seemed to love E.T. when it came out, but nowadays I get the impression that the consensus is closer to your view.

You don’t go to RHPS for the movie; you go for the audience.

I love the movies, but I think PJ screwed that up badly. He made it seem like the trip from Hobbiton to the Prancing Pony took only two days.

Agreed with TB. As I said elsewhere, there are plenty of better cult movies, but there are no better movie cults.

God, that’s the best thing about the movie. It took me several times trying to read LOTR before I finally succeeded, due to the interminable beginning section. Once they get out of Hobbit lands, things finally start happening.

My own entry: I absolutely loathe movies by Wes Anderson. I mean, Royal Tenenbaums was good, and I put up with Life Aquatic because I thought I ought to like it. But by the time I saw Darjeeling Limited, I wanted the man-eating tiger to start eating all the main characters, turning into a nature-horror; and Fantastic Mr. Fox made a pathetic travesty of Dahl’s lovely trickster tale, turning the dashing trickster into an exercise in directorial self-pity. Hated hated hated it.

For movies I love that others don’t like so much: **Mars Attacks**. Yeah, objectively speaking it was probably total crap. But I saw it on a date with a cute geeky girl, and it was a fun date, so I loved the movie.

“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”
Never read the book or saw the original version but everyone said how great the book, original version, and English version were and the trailer looked great.

It was a run of the mill predicatable thriller with an anal rape scene thrown in for shock value. What a disappointment.

But…how would you even fix that? A flicker-cut-montage? People already complain that there’s too much walking in Fellowship (which to me seems absurd. There are like, maybe 4 scenes, none of which are longer than 30 seconds, devoted to “walking”. I could see this argument for RotK maybe, but…) so he can’t exactly insert more scenes of travel. And a subtitle that says “12 days later” would just be hilarious.

Anyway, yes, I hate Pulp Fiction too. I really don’t grasp the appeal on any level.

I didn’t dislike Water World. 😉

Just about anything _starring_ Kevin Costner is grossly overrated. He sometimes works as a component or subordinate element but not as the focus.

I don’t get the love for _Pulp Fiction_, _Princess Bride_, \*Citizen Kane \*( I get it from a film student’s point of view but for pure viewing pleasure - hell no), _Casablanca_, _A Christmas Story_(it was \*mildly \*amusing the first time I saw it).

I don’t understand the hate for _Titanic_, _Brokeback Mountain_, and especially _Crash_.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I like the movie **Congo**. I defy you to find a better movie where the heroes shoot killer apes with a makeshift laser gun next to an exploding volcano.

It was so good, they made a pinball machine out of it! “Amy, good gorilla!”

**Rushmore** I like quirky and I like coming of age movies, so I thought this would be right up my alley, but it was stupid, pretentious crap.
**Clean Slate** The Dana Carvey movie, it was a comedy version of Memento. I thought it was funny, and enjoyed it.
