I also loved _The Island_ , which I just saw recently. My boyfriend and I also enjoyed _King Arthur_ , which has gotten bad reviews. I don’t like action or sci-fi movies usually, so maybe only the bad ones appeal to me :). Jaime ---

**Cutthroat Island**. I could wax poetic about my fondness for this movie for quite a few paragraphs. It’s just darn fun and cool, with a great villain, and the ship-to-ship battle at the end, with cannons blazing and swords swinging, is just about the coolest thing I’ve seen, ever. ---

More love for "The Fifth Element.’ I also love “Dune.” And “The Mummy.” And “The Mummy Returns.” I didn’t think “Ishtar” was all that bad, and “Waterworld” was pretty good. ---

Another nomination for The Fifth Element, Postman, Demolition Man, and a few others. And wait, there were people who didn’t like Underworld and Fifth Element? 😕 One of my all-time favorite movies that I think MAYBE one other person I’ve met in real life likes: _Shock Treatment_ , the “equal” (as opposed to a Prequel or a Sequel) to the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I honestly think this is a better movie than RHPS, though RHPS is a better group experience (which works for Rocky, since it’s almost exclusively a group experience) Compared to most of my friends, I seem to be the only self-described fan of _Bring It On_. Other movies that I love that others do not seem to be as enthusiastic about: _Flight of the Intruder_ _Johnny Mnemonic_ _Chronicles of Riddick_ \*Iron Eagle. \* Oh, and my room mate claims that not everyone loves _The Hebrew Hammer_, but he’s obviously nuts. ---

My biggest pet peeve is the opera singer and her belly full of rocks. If she hadn’t been shot full of holes big enough for Bruce Willis to reach in, how exactly was she planning on handing them over? \*\*Ishtar \*\*is a funny movie, and a pretty nasty satire about covert US activities in the Middle East. Time for it to get a wider audience. Directed by the great Elaine May, whose masterpiece _Mikey and Nicky_ should’ve gotten her more slack with the critics for _Ishtar_. \*\*My Giant **is a quirky, touching, grown-up comedy by the same director who did _Heathers_, which should tell you that it’s not the dorky kid’s movie the poster makes it look like. Also contains one of the funniest self-deprecating cameos ever, by Steven Segal. \*\* Made in Heaven** is an atrociously bad script saved–and then some–by a brilliant director, Alan Rudolph, who apparently had some rent to pay. Contains some hilarious cameos: Ellen Barkin as the devil; Neil Young as a truckdriver; an uncredited Debra Winger, in man-drag, as God. **Last Action Hero** –script by Shane Black–is one of the most consistently brilliant parodies ever made, by anyone, in any medium. Seen it maybe 10 times, will never get tired of it. The\* Spinal Tap\* of action movies. And **Showgirls** , of course, which is continuing to undergo a critical re-evaluation as more and more “serious” critics come out of the closet in appreciation of its layered satire, is on my “recommended” shelf in both video stores where I work. ---

Spielberg’s [1941](http://imdb.com/title/tt0078723/). Sure, it was goofy and lame more than it was funny, and it dealt with a phase of WW2 few people care about. But the model work and visuals were fucking _amazing_…especially for that immediate-pre-computer era. (And it dealt with a phase of WW2 few people care about.) ---

Also possible she’d have to eat a lot of fiber and have Dallas get her a magazine to read. Failing that, she could have just had the darned things surgically removed. I’m pretty sure they have that technology in the year 2500 or whenever. How do folks get diamands and drugs that they smuggle in their stomaches out nowadays?[/spoiler] ---

It was meant to look stylish, and damn if it didn’t succeed. ---

**The Core**. Why do people hate this movie? All you have to do is that old “suspension of disbelief” thing … I mean, why do people think that elves and gnomes and Darth Vader are believable, but tunneling through molten lava is implausible? Or landing a space shuttle in a drainage canal? Or restarting the rotation of the planet’s molten core with a few nukes? Hmm; I’m not helping my case much. Suffice to say, pay no attention to that physicist behind the curtain; just focus on the characters. **A Knight’s Tale** First off, it’s just a good movie (‘change your stars’ and all that). Second, the DVD commentary is good. I second and third _The Fifth Element, Joe vs the Volcano and Enemy of the State_. ---

People didn’t hate _Gangs of New York_ but I’m pretty sure no one loves it as much as I do. I’m also a big fan of _Love, Actually_ and _You’ve Got Mail_. Also, do people hate _Femme Fatale_? Because I like it. Also, in the comparison categories. . . I think _Oceans Twelve_ is great, and better than _Eleven_. And, I think that the version of _12 Angry Men_ with Tony Danza, is better than the one with George C. Scott.
