Dwight Yokum in “Sling Blade,” “Panic Room,” “Red Rock West,” and a few others.
I grew up thinking Kris Kristofferson was just an actor. Imagine my surprise to find out he had a musical career as well.
Carl McCoy as the Nomad in Hardware
and Iggy Pop in lots of things (The Crow, Tank Girl, as a DJ in the aforementioned Hardware)
I’ve only seen a little clip on the internet of this show, Eastbound and Down, showing a makeup-free Marilyn Manson playing a waiter. A cameo, really, quite a little curiosity.
He was also in “Leap of Faith.” Though he did play keyboards in the band in a couple of scenes, he didn’t sing; and his role was more “member of the crew and driver of the bus” than “musician.”
Have we had Kristofferson AND Bob Dylan AND Rita Coolidge in Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid yet?
As already noted, no music. As an actor he blended right in with the rest of a very good cast.
I fell in love with her in this movie. “…I know, he thinks he knows everything…”
He also played the record executive in “Wayne’s World”.
Jack White appeared in Cold Mountain.
I wasn’t around at the time, but I don’t think too big a deal was made when Garfunkel made his acting debut in Catch-22.
Iggy Pop also has a cameo in Sid and Nancy with his then wife, Suchi. Bowie’s been in many with larger roles, but he had a funny cameo in Zoolander.
Paul Williams in Smokey and the Bandit. (He played Little Enos Burditt.)
Nitpick: Burdette.
Also: Jerry Reed in the same movie.
Gene Simmons played a villain in the 1984 Tom Selleck sci-fi vehicle Runaway.
There have been a (to me) surprising number of rappers who have done acting turns. My nominee is Common, notably for supporting roles in Terminator Salvation and the cable series Hell on Wheels.
This is what I thought of first. Saw it on cable one morning: Is that Gwyneth? Oh yeah. Oh hey, is that Huey Lewis? Cool.
ETA: It’s a pretty good duet. Smokey Robinson wrote it, I think?
Ah, one more: Angry Anderson of Autralia’s Rose Tattoo played the henchman Ironbar in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, which of course is better known for Tina Turner’s flashy role as the mayor of Bartertown.
Two more for Gene Simmons:
Wanted: Dead Or Alive (1986)–GS is the bad guy, he gets his from Rutger Hauer. It’s nasty, but you’ll laugh your ass off, too.
Extract (2009)–GS is an amusing shyster. Mila Kunis fixes his wagon.
Yeah, but that movie is a musical and the guy is singing all the time!
Though it’s an absolutely terrible movie, Tom Petty’s non-musical presence in The Postman didn’t make it any worse.
Justin Timberlake in Alpha Dog was amazing; I didn’t even know it was him until the end credits.
And the somewhat older version in “Lock Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels”.
And “Heat”.
What about Hoyt Axton in “Gremlins”?
