Hugh Jackman comes to mind.
And what about Bret McKenzie from Flight of the Conchords? He made a lovely non-singing elf as Lindir aka “Figwit” in LOTR and The Hobbit.
He was also in Austenland.
The other guy…Jermaine or something like that…was in Men in Black 3.
Coolio has been in a bunch of stuff where he doesn’t do any singing. My favorite was Batman and Robin, a movie so fucking intellectually bankrupt that they didn’t even have him play one of Mr. Freeze’s henchman.
Another one for ellen Foley is “married To The Mob” as one of the mob wives.
Too bad you’re not asking for TV shows, in this case Gilmore Girls. Carole King had a recurring role as Sophie the owner of the music store, and Sebastian Bach as the guitarist for the band Hep Alien. He did sing on an episode or two, but never a full song, and his non-singing screen time >>> than when he was singing.
Hasn’t Lemmy from Motohread been in a few movies?
Does voice-over work count? Because Petty played Lucky in the last few seasons of “King of the Hill.”
Chris Isaak again. I thought he did a lovely understated job in “Little Buddah” as the father. He also was “Uncle Bob” in “That Thing You Do”. He recorded and cut the band’s first single before handing them off to a talent scout.
Mos Def played Ford Prefect in the 2005 “Hitchhikers Guide” movie.
Harve Presnell in Fargo (the film).
He had a lot of stage experience, although he started out as a singer.
I don’t know if it was John Wayne himself or the producers, but somebody must have thought that having young male singers in the cast would attract teenage girls, so several of his westerns found supporting roles for the likes of Bobby Vinton and Ricky Nelson, along with more mature singers like Dean Martin and Glenn Campbell.
Jon Bon Jovi had a supporting role as a marijuana king pin in the movie Homegrown.
And was in Moonlight and Valentino.
Meatloaf , was the bus driver in that spice girls movie.
Not sure if it counts, but I remember one movie with Mandy Moore and Britney Spears.
As well a forgettable sci fi flick with Mick Jagger.
Declan
Freejack. I remember seeing at least part of that on TV many years ago.
Forgot to add it to my last post, but Rihanna in Battleship.
Declan
That was a movie…? I remember spending 90 minutes with the TV on mute and my pants around my ankles, but…
Aaliyah received rave reviews for her acting performance in Queen of the Damned, though that may have been colored by her untimely death six months before the film’s release.
Hoyt Axton in Gremlins
