Movies from Video Games: Are There Any Good Ones?

Everyone is forgetting the best thing about Mortal Kombat: The Music. And I don’t even LIKE that kind of music.
It’s definitely a very entertaining flick, although its sequel shall not be spoken of.

Tron (the game) - 1982
Tron (the movie) - 1982

Hell yes. Judging from the trailer, it has fog, gaping holes in the middle of the road, radio static, Pyramid Head, and walls/floors made out of grates. That’s almost every expectation from the games right there.

Your very own portable save point? Nice.

Where can I see a trailer? I wanna see the trailer! Pleeeeeeease let me see the trailer!
I’m really looking forward to that movie, though I’m having a hard time imagining how they’re going to make the plot comprehensible. Great game series, but the stroryline often leaves you scratching your head.

I remember this. The down-to-earth death scenes were great, especially when you bought it from a little scratch on the leg in the second or third screen. But it was a movie, of sorts? Who? When? Wha? Huh?

I think both Resident Evil films were h.s. (horse shit.) What made Resident Evil 1 and 2 (the games) was the classy mansion rooms. Class! Wood paneling, warm lighting, fine furniture, animal heads, windows through which the night was seen, etc. The mansion was insanely cool-looking, and I’ll be damned if RE2’s police station wasn’t the most well-appointed police station I’ve ever seen (it looked more like a mansion.)

Moving the action to bland generic industrial compounds and sleek grey metal, as the movies did, ruined the feel.

You are absolutely right about the music. I remember watching it in the theaters, and when the opening music came on, all the MK geeks were cheering and clapping and it made the entire experience that much better. Sitting in a theater full of fans who were really into the fight scenes and laughing at the corny jokes made me like the movie a whole lot more than I probably would have if I had seen it alone.

And I kinda like the sequel…it’s dumb and corny as hell, but that’s what B movies are about!

Yep! The song where they shout “MORTAL KOMBAT!” used to be a staple of the goth/industrial clubs I frequented. It was pretty goofy but tons of fun to dance to. For my elementary PE class last night, I presented a series of parachute games, and the Mortal Kombat CD was in the running for the background music to play during the games. It lost out to Kill Bill V2, but only barely.

I have high hopes for the Halo movie. They bumped Uwe Boll out of the picture and Peter Jackson signed on as executive producer. He is apparantly being very hands on with the preproduction. I haven’t heard when they are going to start shooting.

Am I the only person on this planet who prefers the sequel to the original? I seem to recall my boyfriend giving me strange looks when I told him this.

I’m usually not one for campy flicks, but the two MK movies are pretty good.

To this date, my friend and I still scream “MORTAL KOMBAT!!!” whenever a New Line movie starts and it’s little production clip plays.

That is very good news!

I’ve tried to watch Tomb Raider a number of times and each time I end up getting bored. I loved the first game(the only one I’ve played), and so I keep thinking “How the hell did they screw up this movie?” THe best part, in my opinion, is the temple raiding in cambodia. So basically, I like the parts where tombs are actually raided and invovled. The rest was bleh

Though for some reason I always watch for that brief bit where they land in siberia(the music seems to work very well with the chinooks landing) and it’s nice to see Chris “Rimmer” Barrie getting work.

I haven’t seen the sequel because it’s not on TV yet and I don’t feel like renting it.

Would anyone be interested if they did a movie based on Grand Theft Auto - San Andreas?

Wow! That looks like it may actually be good!
If nothing else it definitely has the feel of the game down.

Last night we watched *House of the Dead 2 * on SciFi, and I have to say, it’s deliciously bad.

Disjointed editing. Horrible continuity. Idiotic characters. Zombies that are neither shufflers nor sprinters, but rather rush forward windmilling their arms in a bizarre and amusing fashion. The gal who played Lex Luthor’s wife on Smallville. And, perhaps most important to the SDMB members, Nadine Velazquez, who plays Catalina on My Name is Earl.

I think watching it on SciFi adds something as well. There’s a scene that obviously involved copious naked booby shots, and it’s been edited down to two shots of the zombie girl’s face. Better yet, there’s a scene where a topless woman looks down and sees in horror that there’s zombie infection creeping up her torso. I guess they figured the movie wouldn’t make sense (!) without this, so we were treated to a woman looking down in horror at a blurry flesh-colored oval over her chest.

I know people have warned against the original *House of the Dead * as being so bad it’s bad, but we really enjoyed the generous helping of cheese that is the sequel.

We couldn’t resist, and Tivo-ed it to watch yesterday morning. The best I could say is that it was more fun to mock than the first one. And proof that nothing can keep me away from a zombie flick.
