high fives Sitnam Glad you liked Outsourced, it’s just as good on a second or third watching.
Not exactly what you are looking for, but you might really enjoy Sita Sings the Blues.
Well, it’s been a delightful day. Just finished Bride and Prejudice. At first I was taken aback by it, given how different it was from my previous experiences, but after a little time I truly enjoyed it. I imagine that’s how a real Bollywood picture looks. My only gripe was that everyone was too damn beautiful.
Thanks again for suggestions. I’ll work my way through the rest and if any truly stand out, I’ll let you know.
Yep, same here. I was and still am completely ignorant about cricket, but my husband and I enjoyed Lagaan thoroughly. It was the first Bollywood musical to be nominated for an Oscar, so we watched it out of curiosity.
Have you seen Slumdog Millionaire? If not, and if you’re ready to go a little darker, that’s a Must-See. It’s not a musical (well, at least not until the very end, when you must watch the end credits) but I and many others think it’s really really good.
Another good “starter” film is Marigold, about an American actress who travels to India to be in a film which gets canceled, so she winds up working in Bollywood.
Once you’re ready for the real thing, Om Shanti Om is a terrific romance about Bollywood movies with the great Shah Rukh Khan.
There is also a trend towards more realistic films where the singing and dancing is done only by people who have a reason to sing and dance. Delhi-6 is about a westernized man who returns to India for his grandmother.
Strange coincidence - *Lagaan *just became available for DVD rental from Netflix. With a “Long Wait”.
