Movies that don't tell you who the villain is

The Usual Suspects, Angel Heart.

Just saying …

No, and I plan to see it, though maybe as a rental. (I tend to try see the big action films when I splurge at the movies.)

But my granma worked in a used bookstore/comic store/ porn store when I was a kid and she watched me a lot. I sat there and read all kinds of odd comics and a bunch of spiderman.

I’m 42 (woot! perfect age!) and haven’t looked at a comic in YEARS! (Except for Maus 1 &2 and The Wild Party, I may not have looked at even a graphic novel in years.) But I thought, watching the trailer “It’s that lizardy thing!”

Regarding the new Spider-Man movie, I hadn’t seen any of the trailers or any other advertising or discussion about it. I went into it about as cold as you can get these days if you don’t count years of a general knowledge of Spider-Man over the years. So when it’s dropped in the movie that Norman Osborn doesn’t have much time (I believe was the line), I went “Oh God, not the Green Goblin again.” I was pleasantly surprised when the villain was The Lizard. I figured that the writers had come up with a new origin story for the Green Goblin and not that they were going to play it straight with The Lizard.

I nominate My Neighbor Totoro.

I’ve only seen the old batman series on tv, and don’t remember a villain called Bane. Googling, it appears to be the same, uh… thing that served as a henchman for Poison Ivy in one of the 90’s movies. Hardly seems like a strong villain by itself.

For fans who have read the comics, Bane is one of Batman’s most prominent villains. In the early '90s, Bane broke Batman’s back, requiring Bruce Wayne to give up being Batman for a significant period of time. He was replaced by Jean-Paul Valley. See, that’s the point. To Batman fans, it’s obvious who the villain is and why he’s important. To everyone else, it doesn’t really matter, so there’s no need to be too explicit.

Was that before or after Batman hit him over the head with a metal folding chair?

Everything about that movie was basically a horrible waste. Going by the trailer, Bane is well-played in it: he’s cunning, brutal, and extremely capable in mind and body. As with most Batman villains, he’s basically a warped version of the Dark Knight himself, and after the Joker probably the most dangerous villain for Batman to face.

Unusually, he’s also known for being a relatively sane and sensible leader. He’s honest, loyal, and protects subordinates who show loyalty in return.

What are you talking about? Or, rather, what’s your point?

I’m guessing his point is that Bane is awesome and what little we’ve seen of him in the trailer reinforces the awesome.
