Another Julia Roberts movie is what pissed me off: “My Best Friend’s Wedding”

The trailers implied that she and Dermot Mulroney’s character had been “just friends” who had promised to marry if they were still single at 30. (One girl-friend and I had promised this [she got married soon thereafter], so I was interested in Hollywood’s take on this.)

But it was revealed that they had been lovers, _then_ broke up and were just friends. This changed the whole premise of the movie altogether for me. I had no sympathy for Roberts’s character, and completely understood Mulroney’s character’s non-chalance about getting married and voiding the friends’ promise.

Plus, all the back-stabbing stuff that Roberts’s character did made her a completely unlikable person, IMO.

And I hate that part of the movie. Diplomatic immunity is not absolute. It can be waived by the home nation, or the diplomat can be tried for his crimes in his homeland. By saying that the diplomat would have gotten away scot free, they are saying that his government didn’t think he did anything wrong. Including multiple murders (one of whom was a South African citizen) and drug smuggling. While South Africa was still under apartheid at the time, I really doubt they would have ignored all that went on.

As for **The Incredibles** , I think the supers would liked it if Syndrome has sold all his inventions to everyone. They would not have had to hide anymore. They were nto fighting to hold him or anyone else down, they were fighting to save lives.

You’re thinking of the REAL South Africa…this was the Richard Donnerland South Africa, populated entirely by Nazis.

I understand that. It still pisses me off. It is just a stupid action movie, nothing in it has any correlation to reality, and I don’t really expect an action movie to do that. But when I see Lethal Weapon II, their entire handling of diplomatic immunity irritates the hell out of me.

Good thing I don’t need to be logical about it. 😛 😃

> Despite the grief it’s getting in this thread, I’d say that _Bowling for Columbine_ shares this general theme. It surprised me that Moore, by pointing out that Canadians own more guns than Americans but have much less per-capita gun violence, ended up by emphasizing that it really _isn’t_ about the guns per se, but about something more subtle in American culture. (Not that this excuses his Heston or Clark stunts.)

While Moore did point out that Canadians own many guns, I do not believe he claimed that they own MORE guns, and if he did he’s wrong, because they don’t.

Of course your statement of what Moore’s point was is 100% correct.

I **always** get pissed off when an action movie (and this probably applies to most of them) takes a creative-effort-saving cheap shot by making the popular villain of the moment into the villain of the movie. In that year, it happened to be Apartheid South Africa. Most years in the '80s, it was drug dealers.

I understand his follow up movie with the same character is just as bad. He’s right up there with Paul Verhoeven now… 😃

The review I read in EW said it was much worse. IIRC they liked Dogville. They absolutely hate Manderlay (I think thats what it is). I’m not sure if it was the same critic who wrote about both. Only about five people will watch it anyway.

Well. What’s so bad about it being repulsive and “degrading”? That’s how it’s supposed to be. A study in how evil people can be in groups. Like Das Eksperiment or Sacha Cohen’s “throw the jew down the well.”

About it being dull I definitely disagree. I guess watching a whole movie without a single car chase is hard for you americans. 🙂

Nice try, Mr. von Trier. **Dogville** has plenty of sex and violence; it’s still a reeking piece of shit.

yeah. I didnt mean anything serious with that last remark. Its just, I can understand if you find it unpleasant or repulsive, but I dont think its dull.

Here are movies that piss me off:

Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy:
Why didnt they just follow the book (WDTJFTB)? Most of what they took from the book was funny. Almost all they made up, sucked. And the love story was just the worst ever.

LoTR:
While I think its an excellent film, and in many aspects very well made, it still pisses me off. Its a bad case of WDTJFTB. And Mr Jackson is annoyingly blatantly disregarding what would make a good film. All his changes from the book are uninteresting at best, and many introduce plot-holes. And he doesn’t even care if its flawed. For example, the scene where Denethor jumps out to dye. There is no way he could run that far, from the place where he was set on fire. Jackson realized that. And he made it anyway.
Dodgeball:
And most comedys like it. They are just so stupid. The stupid characters. The stupid plot. Its like they are made for 10 year-olds.

Hell, for most of history, most people never left their own village. They were likely well traveled if they saw a city.

So according to the “What the bleep?” people, Midevel peasents wouldn’t have been able to see cities. Or people in 1903 wouldn’t have been able to see the wright brothers plane fly over, because they had never seen an airplane before.

Hell, Noah shouldn’t have been able to build an ark, because apparently nobody had ever seen an ark before.

I liked Dogville, though it’s hard to sit through. I’m still trying to decide if it’s emotionally manipulative, particulary when you feel that the ending makes the previous 3 hours worth it(as horrible as the ending is).

A car chase would have saved it though… 😃
(Trying to imagine a car chase without a set…maybe Nicole Kidman could have been running fast on the stage, slightly bent over, pretending to turn a steering wheel.)
