You’ve gotta be careful on pre-judging movies based on the preview, though – while you can usually tell if the movie will suck, sometimes you’re wrong. Case in point: _Galaxy Quest_. I saw the preview and thought “Dear God, this must be the lamest thing I’ve ever seen. It looks bad even before I consider the cast, and it’s got Tim Allen for the love of God! It must suck, suck, suck!” I didn’t see it in the theatre. I would have never seen it had my in-laws not bought me the DVD for my birthday. I actually put off seeing it for several weeks before I finally broke down and popped it in my DVD player. It didn’t suck. Not only didn’t it suck, I actually enjoyed it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not headed for the AFI list or anything, but damn if that movie didn’t made me smile. Now I tell people to rent the documentary _Trekkies_ and watch it immediately before _Galaxy Quest_. No one’s been disappointed yet. Actually, this might make an interesting list: Movies you thought would suck royally, but ended up being enjoyable. I would start with: Galaxy Quest Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (in my mind, the only role Keanu was born to play) Charlie’s Angels (boy, I was ready to hate this one, but how can you _not_ like a movie this goofy?) Any others? ---

I have an ongoing list of movies that I swear to never see, the list contains (note: this is merely a summerized list) Dude, Where’s My Car Road Trip Prety much any movie based off of a 60’s or 70’s TV show Scary Movie 2 (I would also have Scary Movie 1, but I was forced into seeing it) ANY Jackie Chan Movie (and some Jet Li movies (though Kiss of The Dragon looks cool)) Titanic Moulin Rouge Bubble Boy Beaches The list goes on… BTW, why do you people not want to see Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back? Sure, the title is pretty stupid, but Kevin Smith rules! All of his other movies rock, so why do you think this won’t? (Unless you just plain don’t like Kevin Smith movies in the first place, in which I say, what’s wrong with you?) ---

I thought _The Brady Bunch Movie_ and _Charlie’s Angels_ did this pretty well. Again, neither one is exactly Oscar-calibre or anything, but they were pretty enjoyable overall. Oh, and add _Brady Bunch_ to my prior list. ---

I just got back from seeing The Others, and the trail for Glitter (starring Mariah Carey) appeared in the previews. Dear god, kill me now. I can’t believe some studio poured money into a movie based on Mariah Carey’s life and let Mariah Carey actually star in it. Tacky, tacky, tacky. \ ---

Super-hunky actor [Sam Rockwell](http://us.imdb.com/Name?Rockwell,+Sam) (_sigh_) is in both of them (as the guy who dies in an episode to prove that they’re in a serious situation, and Eric Knox). Honestly? Most of them. For me, movies do not have the benefit of the doubt. There is too much crap being churned out these days. A movie has to prove its worth to me. That means no opening weekends, no going on trailers. I read reviews and I listen for the word of mouth. If “Memento” turns out to be worht seeing (it was) then I can see it just as well 2 weeks from now as I could opening night. I’ve almost never seen a movie that people regretted wasting their time and money on that wasn’t demolished by critics and/or had dreadful word of mouth. ---

For all of you who thought that Dude, Where’s My Car? was going to be stupid and decided not to see it, THANK GOD YOU MADE THE DECISION. It was the most wasted 2 hours of my entire life. And the most poorly spent $7.50 I have ever earned. All of my friends and I walked out of the theater feeling stupider than we did before we saw it. The plot was something like, two losers wake up hungover, their house trashed, forget their twin girlfriend’s birthdays, so they go out looking for a present. They find that they’ve frequented a strip club the night before, encounter a transvestite club owner who wants his/her money back, and something to do with alien babes in tight black plastic bodysuits. There was actually a giant hot girl in a tight black body suit who tried to eat people. God, that movie should burn and the writer should go to hell. The acting alone was the biggest anti-drug campaign I’ve seen in my entire life. ---

I just saw Rat Race today, and thought it was ourright hilarious. It’s for the most part slapstick humor, but it’s still great fun. I second the motion for Legally Blonde. The previews for that made my head hurt. ---

The other night I saw a trailer for a movie called _Shallow_, where the psycho-looking guy from Tenacious D has some sort of problem (maybe I should call it a solution) where he sees some enormously obese girl as Gwynneth Paltrow. This looked to me like the most blatant, callous “fat joke” film I’ve seen since the dude who was just like John Candy died. I wonder how long this thing sat in the can until someone felt the PC brigade had enough wind stolen out of its sails. Plus, um, I think I might have invented the concept. There is no possible way I can go any further than that without getting into a lot of trouble. Suffice to say I am an asshole. But at least I know it.
