Oh, I forgot that movie indeed. It wasn’t very good at all was it?

Interestingly enough, both Giant Robo (what became “Johnny Sokko And His Flying Robot” and “Voyage Into Space” here) and Gigantor (or “Tetsujin 28-go” in Japan) were created by the same man, prolific manga artist Mitsuteru Yokoyama. There’s a terrific direct to video animation version of Giant Robo from the 1990s that stars characters from across Yokoyama’s body of work.

I never saw any “Johnny Sokko” until a ‘90s home video release of the series from Orion. These days I believe “Voyage Into Space” is streaming on a few services, if you dare to face the menacing Emperor Guillotine and his Gargoyle Gang once more.

I just watched Fiend Without a Face free on YouTube, I suspect some of these have dropped off the radar because there’s no more royalties to be collected.

FWAF is interesting as a product of its time. In one of the opening scenes a captain is commenting on a major’s benzadrine use and suggests he might try sleep instead.

The biggest barrier to finding those “lost movies” I saw as a kid is remembering the titles. Once I have that, I’ve always been able to find it _somewhere_.

I have seen a certain movie a number of times but not for 50 years. There was a small group of people stranded on an island where “killer moles” were attacking. The moles were just terriers with added on fangs, funny as can be. It got to the point where the mole dogs were chewing their way into the building. The people escaped by welding a bunch of 55 gallon oil drums together and crab walked into the water with a moles nipping at their heels.

Attack of the killer shrews. A MST3K honoree, and notable in that the much better movie Tremors has basically the same plot.

I watched this every Christmas when I was living in Toronto. It was usually on Sunday afternoons or late at night. I liked the way the Martians used Wham-O Air Blasters to block Earthlings’ memories.

If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend the straight-to-DVD movie **Elvira’s Haunted Hills**. It’s not just boob jokes – it’s a pitch-perfect send-up of the Roger Corman Poe movies, with Richard O’Brien even wearing the same style octagonal shades that Vincent Price wore in _The Tomb of Ligeia_.

I remember watching these on TV:
The Monolith Monsters
Crack in the World
4D Man
The Valley of Gwangi
20 Million Miles to Earth
The War of the Gargantuas
This last one might not be considered “forgotten,” but they used to broadcast it all the time (and then, it disappeared):
Master of the World

I’ve seen all of these, several times over.

Monolith Monsters is definitely one of the more obscure 1950s mnster films, but with a truly new and original concept. Well worth watching.

I actually saw _Crack in the World_ in a movie theater when it was new. It shows up even less often than The Monolith Monsters

My parents went out to see The 4D Man, which was billed as “adult”, probablt because there are scenes of a woman in her underwear. I was familiar with the film because it was featured prominently in Famous Monsters of Filmland. I ev entually saw it, and wasn’t terribly impressed. Another teleportation-gone-wrong movie. It eventually showed up on MST3K, which sort of asures it of longevity.

_Valley of Gwangi_ and _20 Million Miles to Earth_ are both Ray Harryhausen films with great stop-motion animation effects. So, not really obscure.

_War of the Gargantuas_ is a little less common. I don’t think most people who see it realize that it’s a sequel to _Frankenstein Conquers the World_, another flick I know through FM (and which I saw in the theaters. It stars Russ Tamblyn! He’s the extraordinarily athletic dancer who was leader of the Jets in the Robert Wise film of _West Side Story_. He’d also been pretty impressive in George Pal’s _tom thumb_.

He appeared in exploitation films after that and kind of disappeared for a while, but resurfaced in David Lynch’s _Twin Peaks_ and some movies that cashed in on nostalgia for him (like _Cabin Boy_). He’s still around, and has been on some TV series, but not lately.

Roku has loads of free film channels.

I watched **GI Samurai** (1979) a few days ago. The film that asks, what if a squad of modern weekend Japanese soldiers and their equipment were teleported back to the Samurai era of Japan. Light on plot or character development it was never the less fun to watch.
