Movies that were overrated garbo

OMG, that reminds me of the first time I saw Metropoliltan. Now, I love that movie beyond measure. It’s still in my top 10 after 30 years*, but I’m the first to admit that it’s not for everyone. Where I saw it was the now-defunct, then-funky Pittsburgh Playhouse, who had booked it for four weeks. And of course, they lost a ton of money on it. Which was ridiculous, because that made it a very hated film in P’bg, beyond the fact that some people didn’t like it the one time they saw it. But even I didn’t want to see it enough times to justify a four week run. I appreciated getting to see it twice, but c’mon. I’ll never know who made that decision and why. I mean, even films that did have insanely long runs, like Star Wars and Titanic, were initially booked for normal duration.

*H&M is still in the top 100, but no longer top 10 as it once was.

ETA: Oh, and JAQ and Deeg, you’re probably right. The movie didn’t change; she changed. I feel the same way about Close Encounters. I used to be happy for Barry when the aliens took him; now I’m heartbroken for Jillian.

I’ve heard Spielberg feels the same way now.

I like that movie as well, along with the others in the Whit Stillman trilogy.

Miller: I know he does. He’s said since then that he would never have ended CE3K the way he did if he were making it today. Spielberg was not a parent in 1977,but now he understands that Roy would never go into space and leave his kids, at least not on a moment’s notice.
