Ever since Independence Day came out I’ve been hearing about a potential sequel called Memorial Day. No, really.

“Bye Bye Birdie, Bye Bye”

The final days of Conrad Birdie, a la Elvis. Ann-Margret drags her reluctant daughter to “Birdieland” mansion, sneak in. Fat, stoned, washed up Conrad takes a fancy to the daughter (A-M thinks he actually wants her), late night shenanigans, A-M finds Birdie dead in bed with daughter, they drag him into bathroom and set him on his “throne”, etc.

Would have been great circa early '80s.

Starring Kate Winslet? I’d buy my ticket on Fandango right now 🙂

Believe it or not, _Roughnecks_ was not direct to video, but was in fact shown on Saturday morning alongside the other kiddie cartoons.

_Starship Troopers_ doesn’t need a sequel. The end of the movie is the end of the book. The best suggestions I’ve heard were:[ul][_]The plot of Terminator 3 is that Arnold Schwarzenegger is sent back in time to prevent Starship Troopers from being made.[_](seriously now) Make John Steakley’s _Armor_ into a movie and do it right, the way _Starship Troopers_ should have been done.[\*]Hi **Opal**![/ul]“Bugs Mr. Rico! Well, the bigger the hit, the more surprised I am when there’s no sequel.

Some of the bigger surprises?

1. I didn’t LOVE “Forrest Gump” (I liked it, but it was nothing special), but it won so many awards and made so much money, I assumed a sequel was inevitable. So, I was pleasantly surprised when I heard Tom Hanks say, “We went as far as we could with that character. What would we do next, have Forrest in the white Bronco with O.J. Simpson? It was a special movie, but enough already.”

2. I expected a few more feature length “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” sequels.

3. I’m a bit surprised that the Farrelly Brothers never made a “Dumb and Dumber 2,” though I suppose one could argue that ALL their movies are sequels to “Dumb and Dumber.”

4. Though most of the cast was already too old to pass for college students, I’m still surprised there was no big-screen follow-up to “Animal House” (the TV sitcom doesn’t count).

There is one, sort of. Apparently, they’re coming out with a movie that deals with Otter’s kid at college.

I forgot who said it, but someone once proposed that a sequel to _Titanic_ should consist of the following:

Set in contemporary times, Jack Dawson is found alive in a block of ice, held in suspended animation a la Captain America. After being revived, Jack learns that Rose is dead, and that the Titanic tragedy occurred because of insufficient lifeboats. Pissed, he tracks down the White Flag shipping company (or whatever its name is), arms himself to the teeth, and goes in with guns a’blazin’ for revenge.

Well, how _else_ can James Cameron make up to all the men in the world who got roped into seeing the original movie? 😉

It’s not for lack of trying, as [this somewhat lengthy article](http://www.laughingplace.com/News-ID115130.asp) makes clear. Short version: Disney and Speilberg co-own the Roger Rabbit copyright 50-50, and both must agree to any future use of the character. Disney and Speilberg got into a pissing contest over the second Roger Rabbit short subject; Speilberg wanted it attached to “Arachnophobia”, Disney insisted on attaching it to “Dick Tracy”, leading Speilberg to withhold script approval for several years. Once Disney finally started preliminary work on the sequel, test footage showed the budget would skyrocket, and Eisner cancelled the film, shifting its previously allocated budget to “Pearl Harbor”.

There _is_ a sequel to _The Rock_. It’s called _Rushmore_! No, wait, it was _Grand Canyon_! Or maybe I’m thinking of _The Presidio_? Or was it _Gettysburg_?

Weird Al thought of this years ago.
