Well, you know, why not? Star Wars, being squarely in the realm of space fantasy, can always adapt its technology to fit. For instance, don’t all these small fighters have “deflector” screens or fields, to deflect incoming projectiles and beams? This has been “lore” since 1977, “…switch your deflectors on, double-front!..”

OK, so just tune them such that they deal with an oncoming atmospheric air flow, to provide lift and maneuverability, and reduce drag and atmospheric heating. Boom, done.

Well, yeah, not only that, but I completely forgot about the fact that they’re shown flying around in Cloud City at the end of TESB.

Before the new Star Wars movies, it did not occur to me at all that TIE fighters could fly in an atmosphere. That just seems aerodynamically impossible.

I seem to remember TIE’s on Bespin?

TIE fighters specifically don’t usually have deflector shields; they are ultra bare bones, designed as fast but disposable. Short ranged, no hyperdrive, no shields.

Very few TIE starfighters were equipped with combat shielding, though they were included on the Avenger and Defender and could be retrofitted onto most TIE types. This lack of shielding was a factor toward the TIEs extreme speed. Retrofitting of this type was fairly common in the New Republic era, as ships and manpower became more valuable to Imperial forces.

It’s weird to watch Blazing Saddles now and become shocked at the massive use of the N-word throughout. Watching it 30 years ago didn’t produce the same reaction. And a couple of the uses were quite funny.
