# Movies with Bully Scenes

My daughter is preparing a presentation at school on the topic of bullies. She’s going to show some video clips from movies and TV shows with bullies, like the Simpsons and Christmas Story. She wants one that actually illustrates the point she hopes to make, though, which is that talking is better than confrontation, so can you think of any good ones that are easy to find and have the victim standing up to the bully verbally instead of using water balloons or just beating the crap out of him? Thanks!

The only one I can think of is the bar scene in _Good Will Hunting_ - but of course the same character uses his fists in other scenes.
But maybe it’s time to have a talk with your daughter about [selection bias](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selection_bias)?

Yeah, the first good example of a Bully movie I thought of was _Back to the Future._

I immediately thought of _The Butterfly Effect_, and it is _almost_ appropriate since You can see several different possible outcomes of several situations and some of them are indeed solved, or almost solved, better by talking than by violence. Indeed one could show clips of two different versions of the same event and show how the different outcome changed everything!
Now, if only any of these attempts had been successful, and not used bad language, it’d be a shoo-in.
But of course none of the potential examples in that movie meet your criteria.

_My Bodyguard_. I know it fits in with the topic of bullies but I’m not sure if it will illustrate the point you want to make. It’s been so long since I have seen it that I don’t remember anything other than I liked it.

actually, the bullys bodyguard gets beaten up by the kids bodyguard, and the kid beats up the bully.

And besides, in that scene, he (Will) is the one who seems to want it to escalate into a fight, even after he’s verbally eviscerated the other guy.

I’m having trouble coming up with examples. Even in the fairly innocuous Brady Bunch, the bully must take one to the chops in order to change.

Well, first thing I thought of when I read your subject was [Bully](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0242193/), but then I read the OP so forget that one (since they kill the bully in question).
**Can’t Buy Me Love** has a scene at the end where the jocks are bullying the geek and Patrick Dempsey comes to his defense with an impassioned monologue that seems to bring about peace between jocks and geeks everywhere.

This one came to mind for me too (though I’d forgotten it was Patrick Dempsey until I IMDBed it!). As long as your daughter can stand the sight of some extreme violence being performed on a carton of milk, this one may work. 😃

The best scene I can think of is in _A History of Violence_, but I really doubt if that’s an appropriate movie for your 12 year old.
