From a storytelling standpoint, Cameron alone has a full character arc. Nobody else does. Bueller remains forever the same. He is a catalyst for change in others.

Well, it is described as a supernatural movie with spells, toad effigy and mysterious powers. There is also a missing European version, never to be seen again.

Little magics, yeah, but nothing even hinting at time traveling a hundred years in the future, and nobody screaming in panic “What the holy fuck was THAT??” And diving off their bikes in mad panic as the four jets fly in formation right over them. It would be like, what if the movie “Practical Magic” ended with that party…and a final scene where there is a news report that Washington DC had nukes dropped on it.

Bueller is a classic trickster figure, someone who comes in and throws everyone’s life into disarray. Characters like that rarely change themselves.

In _Hopscotch_, the main character infiltrates a vacation home belonging to his ex-boss. When he finds a framed photo of the ex-boss on a desk, he takes the opportunity to gloat…and the photo’s expression gradually changes from a smile to a frown between shots. Like the _Quick Change_ example above, it would be perfectly fitting in a Zucker Brothers sight-gag-fest, but there’s nothing like that in the rest of the movie.

Thinking about “nothing like that in the rest of the movie,” I’m reminded of _Trading Places,_ again. When the Duke brothers are explaining to Valentine (Eddie Murphy) that they trade in commodities, and point out examples such as coffee, gold, and orange juice; they point out pork bellies. “From which, they can make bacon, such as you might find in a bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich.”

Valentine looks straight into the camera, breaking the fourth wall, with a look that says, “Do these clowns really think that I’m that stupid?” And that’s the only instance of breaking the fourth wall in the whole two-hour-plus movie. Why was it included?

The “why” to all these things is probably “The grownup kids who make movies are just having fun playing with their toys”. Somebody had a wild idea, somebody else laughed, and “Why not?” became the answer. Shhh; don’t tell the suits.

IIRC, it was a trademark of director John Landis to show a character glancing at the camera (and to feature the words “See You Next Wednesday”).

I’ve heard the alien abduction scene in _Life of Brian_ was a reference to _Slaughterhouse-Five_.

Now, what really stuck out to me was the advertising executive musical numbers and other ad agency bits in _Attack of the Killer Tomatoes_.

It would be hard put to consider any moment in a Killer Tomatoes movie as a “WTF moment”. 😄

I always thought it was a nod towards the [Chariots of the Gods?](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chariots_of_the_Gods%3F) notion that space aliens influenced ancient human civilizations.

This is also standard for some regions/ethnicities in Canada, and so perhaps some parts of the US?

The ending of **The Black Hole** is weird enough but the shot of the mad scientist and evil robot merged together is extra weird.

Because it doesn’t matter. What matters is he is going to stand up for himself and not sit idly by as the things in his life affect him, right or wrong, his father will come home, he will tell his father what he did and he will have to deal with Cameron. Then he smiles. He is young but now a complete man who will chart his own course.
