I got that part. With the scene missing though – including the salesman’s pitch – it was the first time I had seen Butch have any interaction with a bicycle at all so it came out of left field.

I missed the song as well, so there was the silver lining.

I like the LOTR movies and I like the LOTR books but I view them as almost separate works. Even with a ten-hour trilogy there’s a lot in a thousand page epic (This generation’s [doorstop](https://doorstopnovels.blogspot.com/2012/01/door-stop-les-miserables-by-victor-hugo.html)) that has to be left out and some of it wouldn’t translate well to the screen anyway. PJ and company had to punch up the drama here and there or lose the viewing audience.

In the book Faramir had not the slightest temptation for the Ring, saying if he’d found it lying in the road he would have left it there and that’s when Sam said he was a man of quality, at Henneth Annûn. They never even went to Osgiliath but the ‘will he or won’t he’ moment works in the film.

Likewise ITB when the lit beacons of Gondor reached Edoras Theoden did not hesitate in the slightest whether to answer the call only needing time to marshal his forces.

Parts that worked for me were Arwen transporting Frodo to Rivendell – it eliminates an elf the viewers would have no clue about why he was significant and is never seen again – and Grond being more spectacular than my imagination had conjured.

Butch Cassidy/Raindrops scene quick trivia hijack: if you’re planning a trip to Zion National Park, you can visit the filming location just outside the park in [Grafton](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grafton,_Utah). The red-rock scenery is great and it’s a good place to get away from the crowds in the park. /hijack

It’s a [cow tools](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cow_tools) joke. The implication is that it’s some sort of lingerie, or maybe even sex toy. The joke is trying to figure out how the physics of how she’d wear it “normally,” and how it could end up around her ankle.

The joke is she wore it on her arm and it slipped onto her leg. It’s just deliberately nonsensical absurdism.

I disagree, it’s meant to be a sex joke, the same way “Nice beaver” was earlier in the scene.

I always thought it was.

I just never understood how. It’s not really funny.

Yea, Jackson did great with that. And, sadly- getting rid of the anticlimax of Scouring of the Shire, and the side quest that is Tom Bombadil.

The ending of _Donnie Darko_. For years I figured it was just another version of Incident at Owl Creek Bridge. Then a friend said he thought it was literal time travel, but how? and what’s with the giant black rabbit?

That surely would have been a WTF moment for non-readers. Hell, even the book fans argue over what TB is and what he represents.

Faramir has a touch of true foresight in the books - it’s Faramir’s dream that Boromir chases up, and the point is made that Faramir in the past was more apt to pay attention to Gandalf than other Gondorians. I read his decision in the same way Gandalf sees Gollum as having a part to play, it’s not a wholly logical decision, it’s god-touched and trusting in his sense of fate.

I thought Priscilla Presley’s thing on her ankle was a sex toy that slipped down her leg from her privates.

I’m surprised nobody mentioned the scene from The Shining showing a guy apparently getting it on with a guy in an animal suit.

This could easily turn into a side conversation here. I find his chapter(s) to be the worst. I don’t normally skip things, but next time I read LotR, I’m skipping Tom.

At least Tolkien realized someone should ask about Tom Bombadil at the big Rivendell meeting. I mean…giving the Ring to him is not a totally crazy idea.

This scene is explained in the original novel; the guy in the tuxedo is Horace Derwent, who was an eccentric millionaire who owned the Overlook Hotel in the 1940s. The guy in the dog suit was his lover; in the book, Jack Torrance learns about an incident where Derwent made his lover wear a dog suit and generally degrade himself at a party for his (Derwent’s) amusement.

The novel is great because Stephen King included tons of stuff about the Overlook’s history that Kubrick didn’t include in the movie.

Since this is a thread about WTF _movie_ moments, I would say that any scene where you say “WTF??” because you haven’t read the book which explains the scene should count.
