Two of em:

**Love Actually:** During the caroling part where he is holding up the signs. I half chalk this up to a terrible breakup I had, but the emotion is always there.

**Transformers 2** : Same scene as written upthread. The way Sam’s dad keeps pulling away and yelling “That’s my son!”. Great acting that sold the scene.

Not a movie, but still, probably the most unexpectedly sad [cartoon](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jurassic_Bark) in history.
What a sucker-punch!

Oh, I’m sorry; I didn’t express myself clearly. I meant my real life: House in the suburbs, job that pays the bills, toilet that runs on, lawn that needs mowing, etc.

Never been to Ireland.

I just wanted to say thanks for the expressions of sympathy for our loss. It was May 27, 2003, so it was a while back. It is not a wound that heals, but is simply an ache that we live with. It is one of those scars that is just – there.

Anyway, I’ve told the story on SDMB in much more detail, but I am always amazed at how my fellow posters react. Thanks again.

Indeed, I recall you posting about it before. As ever, I’m sorry for your loss, and I’m sad that I can’t offer you anything other than some funny cat and dog pictures upon request to help you feel better.

I cry pretty easily at movies. I’ve cried watching movies that I’ve disliked and know are blatantly manipulating me. My eyes were completely dry during Grave Of The Fireflies. For some reason that movie never connected with me. I seem to be alone in this regard.

Nope, you’re not. The subject matter is definitely sad, but I didn’t get an emotional connection with this movie either. I sometimes think it’s the artwork - for whatever reason, the anime style just doesn’t resonate with me.

Because of this board, I’ve watched some of the Miyazaki movies too - you know the ones that everyone says are great? Yeah, they get a meh from me. I can appreciate them, but they’ll never be something I’ll go back to again and again, like most of the Pixar movies. They just don’t do it for me.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess - keeps the world interesting!

I cried at **Click** also, **Stoid**. I thought it was going to be a comedy, and it really wasn’t.

**Bicentennial Man** , for some of the same reasons. I thought it was just going to be a cute little movie about some robots, and it actually brought up a lot of really complex issues.

And, okay, let the laughter and jeers begin, I cried during **Mamma Mia** , and for the life of me I don’t know what did it. I’ve even watched it over and can’t even remember exactly where I teared up… Seeing it the first time had to have triggered some memory or something…

Although I cry pretty easily as it is anyway.

I had asked for clarification earlier.

The thread title is \*\*Movies You Didn’t Expect To Make You Cry? \*\*

1. Movies that made you cry when you were expecting them to.

Example: Phone Booth makes my eyes tear up, there I said it. In the end when Stu/Colin Farrell “confesses” his sins, gets to me every time and I never thought that movie was going to be one that would make me tear up.

So, this category is ones you expected to make you cry, but you list one you didn’t expect to make you cry??

1. Movies that make/made you cry, with a little hint that you just might.

Again, the category is expecting crying. Which of these categories is supposed to match the thread title??? I am thinking 1) is missing a word?

Perhaps when Meryl Streep is singing about her daughter growing up and moving away?

Oh…I remember now. Crap, I would have rather forgotten.

It was when the daughter was riding the donkey to the church (I think), and she asks her mom to give her away, and there were essentially four people all wanting to do that for her (mom plus the three dads). I remember thinking it must have been nice to have so much support. When I got married my parents had been threatening to not show up, and I didn’t know if I would have anyone to give me away. Before the wedding, I got offers from the best man, my father-in-law, my best friend’s dad, and a friend to walk me down the aisle.

As it turned out both of my parents and two out of my three siblings showed up, and were relatively well behaved after all. So, it wasn’t all that bad I guess.

**gigi** : There was a very large typo in my OP. Number 1 should read exactly as the title of the thread does. I managed to leave out three characters and completely mess myself up. I didn’t notice this until it was far too late.

Correct Version:
_1) Movies that made you cry when you were **not** expecting them to._

Category 1: “Steel Magnolias”
Category 2: “The Spitfire Grill” - I won’t spoil the movie but it had one of the most emotionally powerful scenes I’ve every seen because it evokes multiple emotions at once.

Add me as another for _Up_. I didn’t know much of what it was about when I went to see it, and that scene at the beginning really hit me hard. Same with “When She Loved Me” from _Toy Story 2_. I should learn to expect that every Pixar movie is going to make me cry at least once, and be done with it.

As for others: I knew \*Schindler’s List \*was going to be emotionally hard-hitting, but I had no idea it would sucker-punch me as hard as it did. We saw it on its initial limited run, so we really didn’t know what to expect beyond the basic story. Afterward, the spouse and I just wandered around the parking lot at the theater for awhile, utterly stunned. We weren’t alone. That is one powerful movie.

Also, I know it’s not “cool” to admit to liking _Titanic_, but I did. And the two scenes that got to me were the one with the old couple who lay down on their bed, holding hands, waiting to die together as “Nearer My God to Thee” played over the scene, and the last scene after Rose died when she appeared on the Titanic with all the people she remembered “alive” again.

Cool Runnings. ☹

Did not expect to cry during a comedy about the Jamaican bobsled team. But oh, how the tears flowed. At two different parts. Oh dear.

“For God’s sake, would you _look_ at him?!”

That movie is the reason why I have a low tolerance for people dismissing Adam Sandler as an actor.

Well maybe if they didn’t advertise all his damn movies as though they were part of his same ol’ schtick.

The advertising is specifically why I haven’t seen that movie. I like a few of Sandler’s movies, but they do get tiresome and by the time _Click_ came around, I just didn’t care. If they advertising had shown me something slightly more serious I would have gone to see it. Like I did with _Reign Over Me_.
