**Magnolia** would have to be number one for me. A wretched, tedious film sez I, but many folks love it.

Also **A Beautiful Mind**. I can’t understand the praise heaped on that one.

Sticking to supposedly greatmovies:

_2001_ and much of his other stuff.

I **love** sports movies, even so-so sports movies, but I hate _Bull Durham_ and every time I see it lauded baffles me more.

Television and movies always have kids dissecting live frogs, because it prevents the audience from saying, “Who cares? It’s dead anyway.” They also leave out the dissection of earthworms and crickets that leads up to the frogs, and they have kids doing it as young as 8 or 9. I always wonder where the hell the people who wrote this stuff went to school.

> What, no hatred for Moulin Rouge?

This is precisely what I came here for.

I know _Moulin Rouge_ is one of those polarizing movies, so I know there are a number of people who also hate it, but enough people absolutely love it that I think it warrants inclusion in this thread.

_Moulin Rouge_ is one of the most unwatchable movies I have ever seen. If I wanted to see light and music vomited through a cartoon musical filter, I’d…uh…not watch this movie. I hated the direction, I hated the “script”, I hated the stylisation-- I thought the use of music was fairly inventive but gratuitous and therefore somewhat annoying. Though I suppose it’s not fair to criticize the music for not serving the story when there _is no story_. _Moulin Rouge_ is, I think, what would happen if a theater geek, an acid-tripper, and a nine-year-old kid directed a movie by committee.

I think there’s only one movie that I really hate. If I don’t like a movie that everyone else does, I just figure it’s a movie that just didn’t connect with me and leave it at that. That said, I hate hate hate _My Big Fat Greek Wedding_. And I can’t see why anyone would like it.

Could be but like **saoirse** said, why are 10-year-old kids dissecting frogs at all?

I can’t believe I forgot about **Moulin Rouge**. What a waste of celluoid.

And although I enjoyed it, I didn’t think **40-Year-Old Virigin** was all that. Amusing, yes. But not as great as everyone made it out to be. Ditto **Wedding Crashers**.

Same here. I love sports movies. I even like some Kevin Costner sports movies (Tin Cup, Field of Dreams). But Bull Durham just sucked. It wasn’t even centered around baseball but more about how many players Susan Sarandon could sleep around with. Dumb.

And **Chicago**. If I wanted to see a stage musical I could have went to my local High School. Honestly, even though I see a lot of hate here for Moulon Rouge it had a far better story, better songs, better cast, better sets than Chicago. Chicago was like watching Warren Beatty’s Dick Tracy.
I’m not familiar with this one - who was in it?
Maybe “Life is Beautiful” with Begnini?

**spongemom** on _Hostel_: The only “twist” is that the older friend of the two backpackers is a part of it, and it’s a weak twist, because he acts suspicious from the start. It’s also pretty obvious that the girls are behind it too.

I didn’t think the older backpacker was in on it. I thought he and the other Asian girl were taken into the torture warehouse as well. He dropped out of communication and left only the picture of him and the Asian girl which was taken near the warehouse.

My votes for the thread:

**The English Patient
Forrest Gump
Caddyshack**

I agree wholeheartedly with some ion this thread, and disagree very much with others. De gustibus, and all that.

My list:
**Barton fink** – Pepper Mill and I hated, hated, hated this film

**the English Patient** – the same, squared

**The Crying Game**
Any Shyamalan movie _except_ **The Sixth Sense** , which we loved
I haven’t sen all of **Napolean Dynamite** yet, but I’ve hated what I’ve seen

**Donny Darko**

Going to “Classic” films, I can’t see what all the fuss about **Gaslight** is. Or **The Manchurian Candidate**.

Personally my middle school friends ruined Monty Python for me, I was forced to endure their movies so many times that I can’t stand to watch ANY of them anymore. Life of Brian, Holy Grail, whatever. I just can’t stand them.

Maybe you just don’t dig Angela Lansbury.

I’d like to second _The Breakfast Club_. It’s a dreary little teenage wine-and-wankfest. At least Holden Caufield had a dead brother to be upset about. The characters in this turd have the good life, but feel a need to cry anyway.

Both of those were came first (and second) to my mind when I saw this thread. I hesitated to post because, as “cult” films, I wasn’t sure that the term “everone else loved” fits.

Well…I can see I’m probably not going to get a lot of sympathy here. Loved _The English Patient_. Adored (almost) every minute of _The Lord of the Rings_. Have _The Princess Bride_ memorized. _The Shawshank Redemption_ is one of my favorites. Thought _Gladiator_ kicked ass. Liked _Star Wars_ episodes 1&3, though 2 pretty much sucked.

However.

I sat and waited for _Napoleon Dynamite_ to become even vaguely amusing, which it never did. I have yet to find a Kevin Smith movie entertaining. I have only though well of a single Coen Brothers film (_O Brother, Where Art Thou?_). Hated _Forest Gump_. Yawned through _Gone With The Wind_ and _Citizen Cane_.

And, my nomine for movie I hated and everyone else seems to love…and I know I’m going to get throttled for this one.

_Breakfast at Tiffany’s_.

I’d heard for years about how incredibly fantastic this movie was. The sparkling wit. The romance. Audrey Hepburn. _Moon River_. Finally rented it on Netflix and ye gods was I underwhelmed. I didn’t like a single thing about it.

Pulp Fiction - I was so totally bored by this movie, I honestly don’t understand what anyone saw in it.

And I really don’t know why Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey have careers.

Almost forgot, anything by Shamylan or however it’s spelled. (Sixth Sense was alright though) These creepy settings with a twist that he’s so fond of…at least come up with a good story and a twist that isn’t completely moronic. Please, just once…
