Movies you liked but most everyone else thought sucked

The few people who saw Crumb seem to come away a) I don’t like pictures like that, or b) Crumb was a friggin loser.
During the first third of the film I was in camp b.
By the end of the film I was thinking “God, he’s the most normal of that whole dysfunctional family.” And I ended up respecting him very much.

Yup, I love about half the movies mentioned so far and thought the rest were crap. Guess it depends on what circles you travel in. BTW, Terry Gilliam is a veritable directing god and has never made a bad film, including “Jabberwocky”. If anyone says otherwise, you have my permission to beat them.

Another I thought of - “Dick Tracy”. I loved everything about this film except Warren Beatty. What planet was he on?? He should have been the anchor for the whole damn movie, but instead he looked like some guy who just wandered on to the set by accident. Everyone else was great. If only they had let Mandy Patinkin sing more than one song. sigh

<preparing myself for revilement>
Starship Troopers
Virtuosity
Armageddon
ID4
<name a teen movie. any teen movie. then shoot me>

Fight Club - A good number of my close friends like the movie but I know many more people who figured it was some low-budget crap movie that only psuedointellectuals would like.

Gattaca - I didn’t see it til it came out on cable because I felt strongly against science fiction that has that 1920’s look. However, upon watching it, the movie kinda grew on me.

Out of Sight - This movie seemed clever. One of my personal faves.

Tremors was considered a bomb but I liked it a lot.

“So, I guess, like, we don’t vibrate, then!!”

Luc Besson’s Joan of Arc
I truly enjoyed this and was surprised to see it receive such a roasting. Many people canned it outright because of Jovavich’s acting but even that I feel is unjustified (after all she was playing an uneducated peasant girl with an enourmous amount of faith - a role I thought she did well). The ambiguity of whether she was seeing visions or self-invoked delusions was done masterfully I thought. Very thought-provoking.

Hudson Hawk
One of my all-time favourites, Hudson Hawk still seems to be widely disliked outside of my immediate friends circle and the SDMB.

The Last Action Hero
I never really understood everyone’s dislike of this movie. Maybe it wasn’t actiony enough for diehard Arnie fans, but I thought the whimsical plot was funny and interesting. Go figure.

Kasuo: Gaqttaca is a very cool little flick.

And Hama: Sid 6.7 is still one of my all-time favourite bad guys.

kasuo: you think no one else liked Out of Sight? It’s generally considered a fantastic movie (and rightly so).
Movies on my list:
Bring it On
both Under Siege movies
and I somewhat appreciated the camp value of the truly horrible Batman and Robin

Someone else who’s actually saw this? AFAIK, it never got any release and the only reason I caught it was because Compton’s agent (Virginia Kidd) brought a copy to an SF convention and demanded everyone go see it. I don’t know of anyone saying it was bad, though. Just blank looks. It’s on my list of great films no one has ever heard of (with The Well and Black Moon.

Actually, a lot of films on mentioned so far were generally well regarded: Tremors, Fight Club, Out of Sight, Crumb, The Fisher King, etc.

Another to be added: Mouse Hunt

One From the Heart. Not only did reviewers dislike this Coppola movie, apparently whoever was responsible for putting it on video didn’t like it either: there’s a scene missing from the video that I laughed out loud at in the theater.

I liked Waterworld. It had a cool premise and Dennis Hooper is cool in just about any role he plays.

I also liked Starship Troopers. The funniest line in that movie was when the girl marine was about to die: “It’s okay if I die now, because I got to sleep with you first”

I loved Mom and Dad Saved The World. Jon Lovitz was a riot!

I like Joe versus the Volcano and North. Nobody else seems to.

Someone I know loves 1941 for some godawful reason. And another friend enjoys Hudson Hawk. Wacky friends I have.

The Money Pit stank?! I disagree whole-heartedly!

And, FWIW, Tremors is a brilliant movie!

I loved it! (Alright, who thinks this movie stunk… Huh? Huh? I smite you all!). I snuck out of work one day to see it. By myself at the movie theater, laughing 'till the tears came. The kids there (who were too young to appreciate the jokes) probably thought I was nutso.

Starship Troopers, Tremors, and The Last Action Hero also get thumbs way up from me.

Let’s see. Some of my own…I really liked The Hudsucker Proxy. Very clever and funny Coen brothers, but I can’t find hardly anyone else who has even seen it, much less liked it.

I thought Ladyhawke was very good. A touching story or star-crossed true love. No one ever mentions this one on a “good” movies list, but then again, no one I know thinks it actually stunk.

Here’s a real loser–Caveman. How stupid can a movie be? But it is on my shelf as something that will make me laugh.

I liked Silver Streak also, in fact, we own a copy.

One that my three daughters and I all like, and almost everyone else we know hates, is Mixed Nuts.

Assuming you mean the 1994 Steve Martin movie,I, too, like Mixed Nuts.

(For the most part, I try to avoid movie discussions on the SDMB. The people here are a very intelligent group and rather witty as well but knowledgeable and trustworthy film critics, they are not! No offense, guys!)

Yup, that’s the one.

I adored the Hudsucker Proxy. Very clever and entertaining. Stumbled upon it when we decided to see the local cinema’s Showpiece (a special movie that runs for one week only - usually obscure foreign movies). All my friends became fans immediately. But as you say, not many people have even heard of it. Poor marketing? No support from mainstream Hollywood? Deserves better…

I too, liked the 13th Warrior.

I just watched Jack Frost, the horror movie, and found myself appreciating the humor of the whole thing. A wonderful piece of self parody.

Please don’t tell anybody, but my brother and I have watched the Marc Singer “Beastmaster” movie about 100 times… I’m so ashamed…

RealityChuck,

Are you talking about the 1975 French film Black Moon or do you mean the 1986 American film Black Moon Rising?
