Geez, this is a lot to wade through.

My entries…
Wes Craven’s “Shocker”.
“The Beast of Yucca Flats”. Yeah, a bit on the ancient side, but it kills me every time I watch it.

> Speaking of films improved by removing songs: _The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T_, which is not a weird horror film but rather a live-action Dr. Seuss movie. It was (in the words of the good Doctor himself) a “debaculous fiasco” and received deeply negative reviews, but personally I think it’s a wonderfully surreal film that works…except for the songs, which don’t really add anything to it. Conversely, the dance sequences are brilliant, and the “Dungeon Ballet” scene is worth the entire film.

LOVED that movie. The part where the little boy and the plumber were apparently foiled in their reconnoiter by the roller-skating guards who were conjoined until the plumber killed them by going all Ben Carson on their asses (he took a giant pair of shears and bisected their _beard_) has burned an image into my brain.

> It’s not so much that people dislike some of my favorite movies, but they’ve never heard of them. One is _The Bravados_, an old Gregory Peck western. Another is _Thursday_, which features a cast of B and C list actors (Mickey Rourke is probably the biggest name), but IMO is a very entertaining film about a former drug dealer trying to leave his past behind.

One of my all-time favorites is _Strictly Ballroom_. It’s Australian, and I don’t know anyone else who has ever seen it.

A decent movie to watch once…once.

One of our absolute favorites. Hilarious. Maybe because we’ve done a lot of community theater?

Interesting that HHGTTG is so hated.

First that comes to mind is “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.” For most people, Michael Cera kills it, but he doesn’t bother me much and the rest of the cast is so good. That film is why I thought Edgar Wright would have been a good pick to direct next year’s **Ready Player One**.

(I’ve heard good things about that Spielberg guy, though.)

I love “Shocker.” Mitch Pileggi as a serial killer? Fantastic soundtrack, featuring the criminally underappreciated Saraya?

Yes, please.

> I _really_ loved Almost Famous and Say Anything, so I was willing to watch anything else Cameron Crowe made. Now both of those are generally well-liked but Elizabethtown was not. And yet I liked it. (And actually I even warmed to Roadies, the premium cable series he was also involved in, but which ended after one season.)

Elizabethtown is one of my favorite movies. I think it got a bad rap because it was marketed as a romantic comedy, when so much of it is about Mitch’s relationship with his father. Almost Famous is great, and I liked Roadies quite a bit.

On the other hand, there’s Aloha.

Another vote for _The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T_.

Hans Conried as an evil genius. Perfect.

More unknown than unloved but I am a huge fan of Bill Murray’s _ **Quick Change** _. I think it was the only movie he ever directed. It’s hilarious to me from start to finish.

I really like Zombeavers (available on Netflix). It is a low budget parody of standard horror movies but it has some great lines and ties things up well at the end.

If we’re talking about movies we like that aren’t very well known (even if they were well received by the critics), I like [this 2002 version](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicholas_Nickleby_(2002_film)) of the Charles Dickens’ novel _Nicholas Nickleby_. It starred Charlie Hunnam, Jamie Bell and Christopher Plummer and as it’s only about two hours, it necessarily drops some elements from the very long novel.

I have mixed feelings about “Elizabethtown.” It wasn’t a bad movie, but it was very uneven. Not one of his better efforts.

On the other hand, living in Louisville, it was cool picking out the landmarks as Orlando Bloom passed them. Even if the geography was fucked up.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It’s amazing how many people I have run into that don’t like it.

**L.A. Story** and **Quick Change** both played at the movie theater I used to work at, so I watched them both quite a bit. I still love **L.A. Story** ; it’s one of my all-time Top 10 movies. I love all the little in-jokes and references. The theater I worked at probably laughed more than most at the name of the resort they went to at the end (since the theater was in New Mexico): El Pollo del Mar, “The Chicken of the Sea”.

I don’t know how “unliked” it is, but it’s mostly untalked about.

I absolutely adore **Stranger Than Fiction**. Will Ferrel does great in a serious role, Emma Thompson is really good as well. I can’t exactly put my finger on what I love so much about it, but the whole thing comes together really well.

And, as all of my favorite movies, it has a nice, happy, ending

Speaking of Ferrel, I thought **Land of the Lost** movie was sufficiently funny and entertaining. Ferrel trying his damnedest to sing that cheesey TV theme song while succumbing to blood-loss fatigued had me in tears.

_ **Man of Steel** _ – it made a lot of money, but only gets a 55% on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, plus people always seem to be bad-mouthing it.

I thought it was great. I loved the score, the visuals, and _almost_ everything about it. In particular, it’s the first Superman movie that really showed how destructive a fight between Kryptonians would be.
