I have an overwhelming fondness for the weird and strange when it comes to the movies and I’ve found the best places to find them are at Netflix and the $5.50 bins at Wal-Mart.

I’ve picked up _The Golden Child_ (Eddie Murphy, Kung Fu and Tibetan magic), _The Phantom of the Paradise_ (70’s Paul Williams in a disco era Faustian mish-mash) and, my fave so far, _Mars Attacks!_.

[The Beast](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094716/) and [A Midnight Clear](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102443/) are a couple of war movies worth checking out. _The Beast_ is about a Russian tank that gets separated from its column during the invasion of Afghanistan, and _A Midnight Clear_ takes place in the Ardennes forest during World War II when a US recon squad discovers a German unit that may be trying to surrender. Oddly enough, both movies have scores by Mark Isham, which I bring up for no other reason except for purposes of obscure trivia!

Then there’s [Midnight Run](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095631/), a hilarious action movie far too few people have seen. Marvin, watch out!

> [Powder](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114168/) would get my vote. Not the world’s greatest movie, but it’s touching and sad and just weird enough.

I saw this, too–and I loved it!

Nobody’s seen _Dangerous Beauty_? Crappy title (‘The Honest Courtesan’ works so much better) for an excellent movie.
