Yes. He’s very good in a small but important role in the 1999 Mel Gibson crime movie _Payback,_ for instance.

That struck me too, but I didn’t see any similarities to The Exorcist! 😄

Even better, he’s incredible in Maverick, another Mel Gibson movie where he comes in and holds his own for approximately 35 minutes of screentime.

I think that kind of sequence tends to happen toward the end of a movie when it is a training montage or something of the kind, at a point you already really know the main characters. In this case, it was done closer to the beginning and the character development mostly done afterwards. I am not sure how they could have made that part of the movie more engaging, though they did their best by adding some character scenes in between to help it along.

Overall, I enjoyed it, but not as much as some other Pixar films I have seen.

I saw this on Hulu. It got about a 6 on imdb and that may be a bit low. I enjoyed it.

Just finished this. I generally like post-apocalyptic things but I thought it was too slow. I have mixed thoughts about the ending, whether it’s reasonable or not. Spoilering…

This guy has been alone but he never hears anything or sees anything about thousands of people living elsewhere? No plan from the government or anything? And the very ending, erasing her memories etc. at home? Seems farfetched.

In the “Oldies but Goodies” department, I discovered what for me was one of those rare gems – an excellent older movie that somehow I had never seen before. I watched _Philadelphia_ (1993) for the first time last night. Wow – Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington, directed by Jonathan Demme. It’s no _Silence of the Lambs_, which was perhaps Demme’s masterpiece, but it fully met the high expectations that it set. I’m not familiar with the precise trajectory of Hanks’ career, but I suspect this was a strong entry on his film credits.\*

\* - ETA: Oh, FFS – I just looked it up and didn’t realize that Tom Hanks won the Oscar for Best Actor for that film! Well deserved, too.

Concur (I’m just concurring all over the place in this thread). I gotta re-watch Night Manager, that was an excellent show all around.

Pretty good so far (and possibly the only general release movie whose main character shares my first name 🙂 )

I’m watching “The Kings Man”, which is pretty good. There is just enough actual history included to make it interesting. Ralph Fiennes, Charles Dance, Stanley Tucci, Colin Firth.

I finally got around to watching _The Shape of Water_. I was thinking it was going to be squicky or gross, but it wasn’t. I loved it. Gorgeous set design, well-paced, and nicely performed. I could see re-watching this one.

My sister asked me how the Russian accents were, and I said Stuhlbarg was pretty good, but the English guy playing his boss was just o.k. It’s things, like proper palatalization, that make all the difference between passable and very good.

Racacoonie is voiced by Randy Newman, who also recorded a whole song for it as well. The song was not written by him, but was done in his style.

You can listen to it here(no spoilers in the song):

Just watched **House of Gucci** on Amazon Prime. It’s either the worst drama or the best comedy of 2021. Al Pacino, Adam Driver, Salma Hayek, and Lady Gaga compete to see who can do the silliest Italian accent. But Jared Leto blows them all away with his impression of a castrated Milanese humpback whale.

TCM _Invasion of the Body Snatchers_

I saw it in the theater in 1978. Its by far Donald Sutherland’s best and most intense role. I had a high school crush on Brooke Adams.

The movie holds up quite well. The body pods are just as horrific without unnecessary gore.

Highly recommended.

There are remakes but I consider this version the best.

Poor Leonard Nimoy. He begins with some interesting scenes. He’s funny, very expressive and engaging to watch. Then… He’s transformed into a dull, expressionless , walking zombie. It happens to all the characters after being switched. Nimoy could never escape his typecasting.

The one you watched was a remake. A good one, but not as good as the original which played up the paranoia a lot better.

**Everything Everywhere All At Once** (Amazon Prime)…aka, Racoocoonie. I was a bit disappointed – it didn’t quite live up to the hype. It contained a lot more martial arts than I expected, and the denouement dragged out about 10 minutes too long (and I still don’t understand what The Bagel was, other than an elaborate joke on the concept of an “everything bagel”).

But it was by far the most imaginative movie of the year, and surprisingly funny.
