Moving: 12-hour drive with two cats - HELP!

Last summer I helped a friend of mine move from Kansas back to Idaho where I live. He has one cat. My friend put his cat in a large carrier and he handled the trip pretty well, just a few meows here and there. He slept most of the time otherwise. No tranquilizers were needed. We had him in the front seat between us in a U-Haul truck. We made two motel stops during the trip. We brought his food and litter box into the room with us and this gave him a chance to eat, drink and use the litter box. We also checked the room over and made sure there were no large holes in the walls or any other places where the cat might have gone into.
