But I thought that the auction price was acknowledged to be much less than that type of piano typically sold for. If you get something at a non-reproducible discount, can’t you insure it for the non-discounted price to make it easier to replace if something does happen?

No way. Replacement value is what it would cost to replace.

The lesson is: “always insure valuable goods in transit appropriately”.

Right about now I suspect some asshole transport lawyer is reading the fine print and confirming that the terms and conditions excluding all liability are in place, as expected. Well, at least that’s what I’d be doing if I was the appointed asshole transport lawyer :smiley:
