Incidentally, another book recommendation: _MacOS X Unleashed_ contains a lot more of an introduction and orientation to the Unix side of MacOS X capabilities than _The Missing Manual_ – actually the two of them together make a good comprehensive library and I wouldn’t want to be without either of them.

> I’ve used Suitcase, Font Reserve, and the built-in Font Book for over 1500 fonts. Suitcase, by far, has been the easiest way to wrangle the wily critters into a manageable state, so I highly recommend it. Font Reserve had a nasty tendency to corrupt it’s font database file and crash the app. Font Book slowed my system nearly to a crawl, though that may have more to do with it being new and with my tendency to not read directions.

I don’t think Fontbook has the cojones for that many fonts. The stuff I’ve read suggests that once you pass several hundred, you’re drifting into “pro” territory and need a commercial app for the job.

IMO, Fontbook is just a freebie Apple gives away so Grandma can manage her fonts when she’s banging out next week’s newsletter for the church.
