Moving threads to The Pit

I* don’t think threads started in IMHO, etc should be moved to the PIT. It means that posters who don’t like the PIT- or perhaps should never go to the PIT as they react badly- are sent willy-nilly to a place they don’t want to be.

Yes, some threads do get a bit out of hand. The solution is simple- close the thread offering them the choice of going to the Pit, or a warning that they should “take it to the Pit or the thread will be locked”.

There is NEVER a good reason to actually move a thread to the Pit.

Please don’t.

Ok, other than the “There is NEVER a good reason to actually move a thread to the Pit.” I am saying the same thing.

I don’t think threads started in IMHO, etc should be moved to the PIT. Please don’t.

The posts by the mods have convinced me that yes, once in a great while- there may be a good reason to actually move a thread to the Pit.

See a discussion has actually changed someones mind.:eek::eek::eek:

I hope that this discussion has made the staff realize that moving a thread to the Pit should be a last resort, done only ofter due consideration, and rarely.

Dead link. Searches die after a few minutes.

Taking which thread to the pit? There was a thread about Clothahump that ran in the pit, and another that ran in ATMB. I’m not aware of any that were moved.

The Pit isn’t that bad. If I’m not a jerk I don’t get treated like one and vice versa. In some ways, it’s the most genuine board on this site.

Still,* it’s just a message board*. When I get too wrapped up in things that happen here I step away for awhile.

I much prefer seeing threads sent to the pit instead of warnings and mod noting when threads turn sideways.

Stay on this course, it’s fine.

You are mistaking Heinlein, a writer, with an author. Writers string words together to make a buck.

Look! Up in the sky! Etc.

I dunno, it worked for me earlier. It was quite the list. Not like, say, mine would be, but still a bit more than you’d expect from someone who claims that he doesn’t post there.

You’re referring to *your *mind being changed, right?

The 2nd sentence overstates the fact pattern. Moving threads is and continues to be an available tool, not a last resort, not a first resort. The latter part referring to due consideration, as well as this:

regarding considering carefully, seem to imply that due and careful consideration is not being given. Of course that’s not the case. Due consideration is given, though this is certainly subjective.

If by ‘not a jerk’ you mean echoes the dominant sentiment of the board you might have a point.

Or perhaps just more fact based.

I havent posted in the Pit in quite some time, but yes, I enjoy the Mini-rants threads there, which are less Pit like than most.

I dunno, I think the Pit is a kinder, gentler place these days.

For example, I don’t recall seeing anyone insulted in my thread on Abortion, which is a difficult subject. There have been a few people subjected to insults in the ‘why you like Trump’ thread only because they were insistently counter-factual, incapable of proving their assertions and/or blowing hard on the dog whistles.

TPTB have nerfed the fuck out of the place over the years.

(Not offering judgment, just sayin’.)
.

Far back in the mists of ancient time, in the great and glorious days of the former Pit, life was wild, rich, and largely tax free.

In those days spirits were brave, the stakes were high, men were real men, women were real women.

And all dared to brave unknown terrors, to do mighty deeds, to boldly split infinitives that no man had split before—and thus was the SDMB forged.

Just out of curiosity, how do you know that RTFirefly participates in the Pit, if you don’t?

It’s called “lurking.”

Sounds like you’re characterizing that as an instance of Clothahump participating in a thread in IMHO, when it suddenly got moved to the Pit around him and led to a free-for-all that ended with his bannination.

But his first post to the thread was AFTER the move.

And a new thread started in the Pit likely would’ve had the same result.

It’s called looking at their profile.

I don’t think anyone could blame that sort of thing on everyone else, as Clothy had a general habit of insulting anyone and everyone at the drop of a hat. Any hat.
