moving US embassy to Jerusalem thread

Yeah, you think Americans care two fucks about that?

Perhaps I’m overly cynical but I’m guessing that a lot of the Americans who wanted the move are, shall we say, less than bothered by Muslims getting shot, and most of the ones who are bothered by it weren’t in favor of the move.

Oh please. Everyone is in favour of this, the vicious oppression of Palestinians. The disagreements are on form not substance.

Like most frenzies, this one will quickly die down with time. The US embassy in Jerusalem is the new default, and everyone in the region will get used to it and move on to the next topic to get in a furor over.

2000 people were wounded by thugs equipped by your country and you call it a “frenzy”?

♫ Except the ones who are dead ♫

What word would you prefer?

‘Massacre’ seems to fit. Let’s go with that.

Mass murder?

Most Americans who strongly support the move are hoping that this will bring us closer to the Rapture.

Though I’m a born-again Christian, I think the whole idea of the Rapture is bullshit, and that Christians who let thoughts of the End Times play a significant role in their lives have seriously lost their way. But there are a whole lot of evangelical leaders who are happy to play an active role in leading such people down this rabbit hole. And Trump is all in with catering to that crowd.

One man’s perspective:
“A great day for Israel!” President Trump tweeted on Monday. He also told his followers to watch Fox News for coverage of the embassy’s opening.

Another perspective:
“Tens of thousands of Palestinians are protesting the opening of the new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem, and Israeli army forces have killed 52 protesters, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The ministry also says some 2,400 people have been hurt in demonstrations and clashes.”

Well, maybe a fuck and a half.

Substitute the word “rioters” for “Muslims” in the above, and I think you move closer to the truth.

The Palestinians can’t have what they want, unless they are willing to give the Israelis what they want. If they are not willing to give up anything, then they aren’t going to get anything. That’s how it works in the world.

The losers of a war, or series of wars, do not get to dictate terms. Rushing the fence, throwing rocks, random sniper fire - that doesn’t change things.

“Give me what I want, or I will start a fight and you will beat the snot out of me. Then you’ll feel bad!” If that’s the deal the Palestinians want, they are certainly setting about things in the right way.

This is not hyperbole. Although it has been covered very little in the press, there are a number of Trump’s cabinet secretaries, close advisors, and ardent supporters from the fundamentalist Christian community who are avowed Tribulationists with a literal interpretation of Christian eschatology, and it is not an exaggeration to say that these people are looking for ways to bring about the literal “End of Days”. That these people have even more influence over foreign affairs than “Fox & Friends” is terrifying to say the least because they have no thought of the future beyond Trump and no appreciation for any kind of consequences.

As for moving the American Embassy to Jeruselum, this makes no sense from any perspective other than to inflame Palestinian resentment and anger, and we are already seen the results of that.

I think you’re the one using hyperbole. If they really wanted to bring on Armageddon, they would have encouraged Iran to build nukes.

That was sarcasm, right?

I know, right?

When Senators Biden, Boxer, Dodd, Feinstein, Kerry, Leahy, Murray, and Reid voted in favor of the Jerusalem Embassy Act, do you believe their only reason was “to inflame Palestinian resentment and anger”?

Can someone please explain how moving the embassy to Jerusalem hastens the Rapture? I have never heard how that argument goes.

Actually, yes it is. Come on - “Trump wants to kickstart Armageddon”, and you want to be taken literally? You guys are bigger Chicken Littles than the fundamentalists.

The Anti-Christ has ten horns and seven heads, but none of them have orange hair. You could look it up.

Trump himself couldn’t even spell “apocalypse” and clearly has no idea about the details of the Iranian nuclear agreement other than that someone has told him that it is a “bad deal” for reasons he is not equipped to understand, but he has many people advising him who are Christian fundamentalists with a literal belief in the biblical Apocalypse. You can characterize this as “Chicken Littles” type anxiety as you like bit it remains that this deal clearly and unambiguously prevented Iran from building up a stockpile of weapon-grade material and every other European ally of the United States has regarded it as being effective to that end. By decertifying the agreement unilaterally and without provocation, this not only frees but encourages Iran to develop their nuclear capability. There is literally no reason to take this step other than to heighten tensions and encourage nuclear proliferation.
