For those of you who are touting the iPod, you might want to take a gander over here
One advantage of the MiniDisc is cost. MiniDiscs are tiny, rewritable, hold close to 5 CDs and cost $2 each. It runs for something like 50 hours on a single AA battery, so even battery cost is low. The unit itself will cost around $150; if one gets stolen, you can replace it with a new unit and still have money left over from the cost of an iPod.
And NetMD players can record MDs in little more time than it takes to create mp3s in the first place. I don’t know how they work with macs, but the technology is pretty solid. And you can put mp3s on it, so it’s basically just a different type of mp3 player. But cheaper
Oh, yes. Some stupid comic strip has changed my mind about recommending an iPod. :rolleyes:
So if you have a collection of 200 CDs it’ll take 40 diskcs and the total cost (player + discs) would be $230. For an extra $70 you can get a 10GB iPod and store all those CDs in it - no discs needed. I personally feel the extra $70 is worth the convenience of having 40 MiniDiscs worth of music in your pocket.
Those crazy Penny Arcaders…
Anyway, if cost is an issue, look into the iRiver or RioVolt mp3 players. They play normal CD’s and cd-rom’s with mp3 files on them. I ususally fit about ten albums on one cd-rom, so all you’d have to pack would be 8 discs. Plus, they’re dirt cheap: from fifty to a hundred bucks. Buy three of them for the cost of the MiniDisc player.
Of course, since I got my iPod I haven’t used my RioVolt…
As much as I like me blue MD-DR7, I think an iPod would be the best idea… Find an older second generation one, perhaps it will approach the cost of my DR7. :evil: (US$200). Then again, maybe it won’t.
As for NetMD with Mac - Doesn’t happen in OSX, though apparently there has been some success with OS 9 and virtual PC. Not worth the hassle when you can just buy mr. iPod.
Can’t post without saying something good about my DR7 though, it sounds very nice. Much better than any of sony’s offerings (MZ-N10, E10 etc). :evil:
I cannot, will not, and shall not recommend ANY Mp3 player over a Minidisc player. If I do, my MD player will shoot me in the head.
PLEASE buy a MD player! Keep the format alive! It’s beautiful and sensual, like Charlize Theron, while Mp3 is crude and violent, like Roseanne!
:: I love my Minidisc player… I love it… but it’s dying slowly… :
:
MD forever baby! They rock and they’re getting very, very popular! In fact I would say that I see twice as many people walking around with MD players than people with MP3 players. Plus MD players can play MP3 (if converted) but it doesn’t work vice versa.
