Raise a glass with me, my friends, in memory of Abraham Lincoln, born this day in 1809. His leadership saved the Union, destroyed the Confederacy and led to the abolition of slavery in the United States. He was tragically struck down by an assassin at his very moment of triumph. Statesman, emancipator, lawyer, writer, orator and martyr - his legacy is with us still. To Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States. ---

And to Charles Darwin, who shares Lincoln’s birthday! Here’s an interesting article on these two great men. [http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-lincoln-darwin-bd08-feb08,0,7423035.story](http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-lincoln-darwin-bd08-feb08,0,7423035.story) ---

I’d like to commemorate the occasion by telling a homespun story laced with dry humor and simple wisdom, but I really suck at homespun stories. ---

I grew up in Arlington Va. If ever I had a visiting _fireman_, my first stop would be to take them, at night, to the Lincoln Memorial. In those days(1960-66), you drove right up to the Memorial and parked, got out, walked up many steps, and stood in awe of his sitting statue. You walked around, reading the inscriptions on the wall. Chills went up and down your spine. Here’s to Abe. You done good. ---
