Our friend **Mr Quatro** is back yet again, this time wanting to know “[Do you still have to pay the mortgage if your house burns down?](https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=866074)”. I am pleased to be able to provide the answer. I was going to answer that over in GQ but something tells me it may be better to do it here. No, **Mr Quattro** , no you do not. You don’t have to continue to pay the mortgage if your house burns down, or falls down, or is occupied by Satan, or even if you decide you don’t like it any more. All you have to do is call the mortgage lender and tell them what the trouble is and that you won’t be paying them any more. That’s it. Pro tip: Some lenders may try to argue with you. Stand your ground and don’t take any backchat from them. They respect that. ---

I enjoy **Mr. Quatro** ’s posts on this board. They are amusing fluff. A guilty pleasure, of sorts. Running him off the board would be a shame, imho. ---
