msmith - taking care of mentally retarded people is cleaning up 'retard shit'?

Sorry, I don’t agree. I think it has been adequately shown that this was not the case. Rather that excrement from mentally handicapped persons would not make msmith537 go eww, eww, eww.

When I point to a mentally handicapped individual and say “he’s a retard” that is wrong. Yet since retarded is a “technical term”, I am allowed to point to that same person and say “he’s retarded”? I would accept mental retardation as a “technical term”, not retarded though.

Retarded what? Taken alone the word retarded is not any nicer than the word retard no matter how you want to sugar coat it. Even with the qualifier “mentally” before it, I contend it is still distasteful due to it’s association with the “hot-button” word.

I wondered how long before it went here. And just imagine - if someone said “I take care of niggered people” - would that be worthy of a Pit thread.

I don’t defend the word or the speaker, I question the motives to start this thread. I think it was more out of frustration and a dislike for msmith537 than for that one statement. That I don’t agree with.

If you recall, kabbes made a simular point. And at the time, I conceded that he might have a point. Didn’t take anything away from the meanness of “retard” though.

However, later on, our dear msmith did make a statement that seemed to confirm that he saw my sort of job as merely “cleaning up”, and not much more. And then, yeah, even more than before, he was getting flamed.

You know what? Forget it - forget about understanding it. I am assuming you do not work in this field, or don’t have any association with mentally retarded/Developmentally Disabled people? Because I do. Zette does. We are telling you, “retarded” can be used in a professional setting, “RE-tard” is NEVER used, and is never anything other than a grave insult. But hey - who the hell cares what we say? We know a lot about this issue first-hand, and I am assuming you don’t - but why the hell should that matter, huh?

Disagree all you want. Won’t change the way things are for the rest of us.

There is no such word as “niggered”, and I think you are capable of understanding that one form of a word may be an insult (particularly when used in a certain context, which it certainly was in this case) while another form of the word may not. But hey - why let these details get in your way? Just disagree. Fine with me.

So - you are saying I was not entitled to start this thread? That’s interesting. That’s what I thought The Pit was here for. I see people starting threads here ALL the time over some inflammatory statement someone has made on another thread. And yet, for some reason, “retard” isn’t good enough? Well, OK. Fine. You are free to disagree.

Is this a trick question? Yes.
Cartooniverse, yosemitebabe - Have fun with your pottery. You can give each other tips on what kind of container holds fecal matter best.

Then yosemitebabe would be out of a job.

Oh yeah, Hibbins. I really misjudged him. I am SO wrong. He didn’t deserve a Pit thread! Poor fella! So misunderstood!

Hibbins: Think of it this way: if you know a guy from Tokyo, do you refer to him as Japanese, or do you refer to him as a “Jap?” One is a standard, acceptable term, but its contraction is considered to be a slur. Of course, the fact that everyone here who works with the developmentally disabled is saying, “don’t use that word, that word is very offensive to me and the people I work with” should in and of itself be enough reason to stop using it. Why go out of your way to insult the disadvantaged and the people who are saintly enough to dedicate themselves to their care?*

Msmith: Lovely. Beat up any nuns lately?

*Actually, Yosemitebabe is a little too saintly. C’mon, at least call msmith a dickhead! You’ve earned it! So has he!

Oh, I’ll do worse that that. I will call him “bub”! (This will make sense if you’ve read all of the jobism thread.)

Thanks Miller, thanks Cartoon, thanks to everyone. Gr8KAT (hope I spelled it right) I re-read your last post, slowly. I guess I hadn’t quite savored it the first time I read it. It is freakin’ hilarious! Thanks so much for the good belly laugh!

looks like you already are out of job…
What kind of health plan does un-employed have? or are you still on Mommys health plan?

From the way you talked, I was under the impression you were an adult (in age anyway), not some wet behind the ears little punk who hasn’t entered the workforce yet.

So let me get this straight, your an un-employed stuck up little prick, who happens to have a little education and a little money so he can go and hang out with out other little yuppie larva, and you have the fucking ignorance to insult and put down people who are actually productive members of society?

People who flip burgers for a living at least have a job, therefore there are higher on the food chain than you are.

What a revolting peice of vomit you are. DID NOTHING THAT HAS BEEN SAID SINK IN TO YOUR TINY BIGOTED YUPPIE BRAIN?

yosemitebabe doesn not fucking clean up shit for a living! dumbass. so your stupid little coment about pottery and toliet paper doesnt really mean anything does it?

How can you get any kind of a job if you cant even understand something that simple. I will have to ask my parents(both graduate school professors) how someone as ignorant and apparently illiterate as you can get a degree.

I see your type come and go all the time in the corporate world. Smug little poseurs who have a little education and think their shit doesnt stink. They do ok for a while, and then when everybody figures out what a snob they are, guess whos first when the RIF comes. Don’t get me wrong, the people in the corporate world are lowlifes, but even they don’t put with an arrogant little elitest like you for long…The first time you make some kinda “retard shit” statement in front of someone at work that has a disabled child, you will be screwed. The rather large corporation I work for has an officer in the company who has a developmentally disabled child, You’d be out the door in a heartbeat.

But you still have the $60 shirts, and all…You are so superior…

Hm, I agree with the sentiment, but feel it is a bit harsh to link the conCEpt of “msmITh” with “penis”. Penises have a certain uplifting quality that make them welcome at many social occasions (often, ones that do not require $60 shirts).

You know, I don’t come into the Pit all that often, and I don’t like to post here a lot. I would rather not let myself get worked up about stuff. And I would rather not flame people, because I’m the type who likes to keep the peace whenever possible.

However…

msmith, I really was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt. Some people use a word (such as “retard”) out of ignorance, or because they don’t understand how truly offensive it can be. I work in a job where my particular position in the company requires that I do have a degree (I suppose that makes me “better” than the people who “just” went to high school). But I choose to spend my time with my clients, as often as possible, because they are a group of the most amazing people I’ve ever known. And I’m not saying that because they’ve overcome any great odds or whatever (though they have). I say that because they are really neat people. They have a way of making my day better. And the fact that these people trust me and need me is something that overwhelms me every day, and makes me feel really special. I am not a saint, and I don’t have any great patience (just ask my co-workers). I am someone who likes to work with people. It’s what moves me and makes me think the world is a good place to be. So, even though my big important paperwork is always overdue, I know it’s because I have spent my day doing something worthwhile that makes my life and the lives around me a little better.

So, if you want to reduce the people I work with to “retards,” that’s fine. Be as ignorant as you want. I hope your money and status buy you lots of happiness during your pathetic life. On behalf of myself, my co-workers, and my clients, fuck you, you goat-felching pathetic cocksucker.
[sub](btw, I know that was probably a lame rant, so don’t bother rating it. I said what’s in my heart, and I can’t even find the words to describe how fucking pissed off I am right now.)[/sub]

Ah, so now we see all of that shining legal expertise coming through. Truly, you’re going to help fight the stigma that all attorneys are bloodsucking scum.

Take a lesson from people like Jodi, msmith. The best lawyers are people who genuinely want to help people, and not arrogant little whelps who just want to get a big, shiny car so that they can impress their yuppie friends.

If you’re going to do any sort of criminal law whatsoever, realize that the witness testimony of a guy who works at Burger King is regarded pretty much on the same level as the testimony of a doctor who saw the same crime. Telling the court to disregard the words of a witness because “He’s obviously just an ignorant buger flipper” is not going to help your case.

And guess what, msmith. The worst, the absolute worst thing that a lawyer to abandon all factual argument and debate in favor of mudslinging and snide comments. Lose your cool in the courtroom, and everybody will side against you. Lose your cool in this debate on the SDMB, and guess what, everyone will side against you. In your above post, you have shown just what an arrogant, pompous shmuck you are. Not that you weren’t doing a good job of that already, but at least in your other posts you tried to uphold SOME illusion of intelligent argument.

But hey, if you wanna be that way, fine. After all, you still have your designer suits to jack off to every night, and then you can drift off to sleep thinking about all that money. Then, when you’re old and incontinent in your mansion up on the hill, laying in bed with machines all around you, eating from a tube, maybe you’ll realize that there are people out there (like the ones taking care of your sorry ass) who make a MUCH bigger contribution to the world than a few years worth of tax money.

oops, I apologize, the bit I was replaying to was long before. It doesn’t make much sense here…

I had my doubts from the beginning, but now I am really starting to suspect he is just some burger-flipping asshole who likes to play make-believe on message boards.

Anyone wanna place bets on it?

Diane,
You hit the nail right on the head, as usual.

Zette

One would think that someone with $60 shirts, who can pay $20 cover charges, could afford an appartment that had room enough to paint in. I don’t have a graduate degree and I still have 500 sq. feet just to devote to a recording studio. Course, I aint got me none of them fancy shirts, and I rarely pay a cover charge anywhere(the bands I go to hear usually put me on the guest list).

Hell, I used to live in a little pool cobana and I painted in oils all the time! I just kept the windows open, to air out the smell of paint thinner. And ventilation isn’t a problem with acrylics or watercolors. I even had a little kickwheel (for my pottery) out on the small front porch of the cobana.

You’d have to live in a pretty small apartment to not be able to paint. If you really wanted to paint, that is…

Diane, you are one saavy chick!

Baker informed me that msmith had sparred with him on a simular topic (education, jobs) so I took a few seconds and found the thread that Baker mentioned. Msmith is his usual charming self ( ) in this thread, and mentioned a few interesting personal details: He attended his high school reunion, (which would mean he probably isn’t too young) and that he has a wife and kids.

So - msmith - how do fit the wife and kiddies in this small apartment, huh?

And how does his wife feel about him paying $20 to get into exclusive clubs where he can impress women with his shirts?

Or that he usually dates professional women like lawyers and doctors and such…I have a feeling the Dr. Suess has nothing on this boy…

yosemitebabe, thanks for the link to the thread, I had lost it myself. Oh, and Baker is a “her” and not a “him” Also, thanks for your reply to my email, I just wrote a reply TO the reply!

(incidentally, he displays more than a little weaselling in that thread, if you’re interested.)

BTW, msmith, Cartooniverse speaks for me. What I find fascinating is that when someone tells you that they hope you’ll be in a position where no one will help you, you respond by saying that your company has a good health plan. Funny- all that education, and you don’t realize that money wouldn’t be able to wipe your crippled bottom- only people can do that.

Anyway, a lot of good that health plan will do if you ever get downsized, eh? Better pray that it doesn’t happen to you.
