Minor in the sense that the particular statement was not something horrendous like “you’re an effing retard” (purely an example, not directed at anyone). Even though the use of “retarded” has been argued to be ok as it is a “technical” term, I don’t think anyone here would be accepting of a statement such as “you’re effing retarded”.
You have conveniently defined that “retarded” is ok in certain uses while “retard” is never ok. I contend you shouldn’t accept one without the other. Having to always evaluate the intent of the speaker leads to misunderstandings. I’d rather see both words be done away with, as I have stated I don’t find either word very appealing. I especially find it somewhat repugnant that you can refer to the mentally handicapped as retarded people, yet become completely offended by the use of the word retard to describe excrement from a retarded person.

What picture is that? That he used a particularly un-nice word in what you took to be a belittling way? Or, that he is an arrogant ass? Only one applies to the OP. Remember he did retract his use of “retard”. He even gave an explanation. He did everything except formally apologize.

That’s fine - still doesn’t change the fact that “retarded” is used in a professional setting, and can be acceptable in the context I used it in. I hear it used in the same context all the time at work. I know what I’m talking about. I truly don’t think you do.

But, at one time, you could have apologized, and it would have been OK. A very few of the blind dolts above will be SO surprised with the miseries of old age. You know.
