MSN's driving test

Very EZ test, I got 100%, and I don’t want to be on the road with any of youse who didn’t!

But I did find the “double yellow line” question confusing. In my mind, if it’s dotted on one side, that is not a “double yellow line.” OTOH I got it right.

Hopefully raising the average for wimmen everywhere…

95%. Missed the DUI one. I could never miss the yellow light one after my high school physics teacher pointed out that by using basic physics you could beat a ticket for running a red if you could prove that the duration of the yellow was short enough and your stopping coefficient of friction low enough so that there was a point at which you could not stop the car before the intersection but if you kept going the light would be red by the time you reached it.

85%. Missed the passing on the left one, the school bus one, and the right of way at an intersection one. In my defense I’m not American, have never been there, and was unfamiliar with some of the situations as well as having to constantly translate from right hand drive to left hand drive.

I personally don’t think it is a good idea to slow for a car to pass you. The danger is that if the passing car gets into trouble (unexpected oncoming traffic) and needs to abort the pass it may be more difficult to pull in behind you if you have slowed down. I prefer to keep doing what I’m doing that way I’m predictable and the passing car can do whatever he needs to around me. I accept that this is not the correct answer, I just think it is safer.

based on what probable cause?

Failing or refusing the field sobriety test is probable cause.

Yep. That’s the way they work on my car. I missed that question too, as I checked ‘Low Beams’.

That’s not always true either - the factory foglights on my '99 Firebird can be turned on exclusive of the headlights. They’re also set appropriately low on the car, but in my opinion aren’t aimed low enough to be considered true foglights.

You must have gotten it right. I checked “Low Beams” and I got it right.

I got a 70 and failed.

That would also be the clearest way to say it in the American dialect.

When they say “rear-view mirror”, they’re referring to the mirror inside the car. By the time there’s a direct line of sight between your rear-view mirror and the front bumper of the car you’re passing (through your rear window), you’re 5 or 6 carlengths ahead.

When I learned this in Driver’s Education, the rule was that you had to see both headlights in the rearview mirror (or the entire front bumper).

I keep my side-view mirrors set wide, so if I changed lanes as soon as I saw the front bumper in the side-view mirror, I would only be about 10 feet in front of the other car.

I got 100% too. Although I did dither a little bit on the DUI question before finally picking an answer.

For the passing on the left question, I just assumed they were talking about a two-lane road, not multiple lanes moving in the same direction. But yeah it would have been better if they had described the situation better.

85%. It never occurred to me to care about which way my wheels are turned when I’m in an intersection trying to turn left.

Also missed the one about being able to cross a double yellow line to turn into a business or driveway (I said it was never allowed). That was stupid of me now that I think more about it, but around here there are usually breaks in the yellow lines or a turn lane if there’s an entrance to the left and most residential streets don’t have double yellow lines.

The one about the flashing red traffic light confused me. I guess what they meant is if the lanes going the other way have a flashing yellow light at the same time. I read it as meaning everybody had flashing red lights and thus it’s like a four-way stop. And if you “yield the right of way” at a four way stop and “go when it’s safe,” you’ll never get through; sometimes YOU have the right of way. So I’ll blame that on bad wording.

I missed the one about slowing down if you are being passed. But the question is worded stupidly. I was thinking of somebody passing me while I am in the left lane of a multi-lane road. Slowing down for everybody who goes past is assinine, and dangerous, you should attempt to maintain steady speed as much as possible to avoid surprising other drivers.

If They only mean on a two lane road, then it is only slightly less stupid, but still very dumb. If you are the slow guy, and there a couple cars behind you, they will likely both try to pass. If you hit the brakes for the first guy going past, the second and subsequent cars and going to be surprised as hell as too why you are suddenly slowing for no reason as they speed up to get around. Probably get your bumper clipped doing that. Maintain steady speed is the way to drive.

I missed the DUI one, like a lot of other people in the thread. I do not believe it’s true in this state that refusing a field blood test or breathalyzer means automatic severe penalties.

The double yellow line question so many people missed was poorly written (the whole thing was poorly written, but…). What they’re talking about is a double line where one side of it is solid and the other side is dashed – not a double solid yellow line. We have those all over the place out here. For example, near the top of a hill, the uphill lane will be solid yellow (don’t pass, you can’t see over the crest of the hill), but the downhill lane will be dashed yellow (go ahead and pass, you’ve got great visibility).

Grrr. I’ve been reading too many maintenance manuals for the equipment I work on. So I distinguished between “Warning” (which would be red) and “Caution” (which would be yellow).

So this would be a Warning, while this would be the somewhat-less-urgent Caution.

Also, I call bullshit on the “slow down” while somebody’s passing you answer. Be aware and considerate of him, sure, and slow down if conditions indicate it, but as an official “rule of the road,” I’m going to have to ask to see fifty cites to motor vehicle codes, please.

Oh yeah, I got a 90. See if you can guess which ones I missed.
